I just got two new bettas last week. One male and one female. They are beautiful blue and turquiose. They have the same coloring. The male is attacking the female and ruining her fins? Is this normal mating behavior or does he think she is another male?? What should I do?

I am not real experienced with bettas being together, but I think you need to separate them right away before the male kills the female. Can you divide the tank? I think thats your best solution.

Male bettas will kill pretty much anything that looks like another male, including a female. They tend to nip at each other during spawning though... A more experienced mind will be along shortly but for now I'd separate them.

Males and females should only be kept together when the female has been conditioned for breeding and is full of eggs.
At any other time she will be attacked and may even be killed if the male corners her. It sometimes works the other way if the female is ready for breeding and the male too immature or inexperienced.
As already said, please seperate them.

Thankyou! Again ..... I listended to the pet store. They said that male and female bettas would be better off and show their colors better if kept together! Guess I am off to the store to get another betta tank for her. Do you think her fins will grow back?

Her fins should grow back in time as long as her water is nice and clean.

Oh my, what terrible advice from the pet store!! Good luck with them though, I am sure her fins will grow back, it will be very slow though. When I got my Red his fins were all ripped up and so short, they are growing back very nicely. So, I am sure it will be the same for her.
