Snails are great, they dn't eat your plants as much as your fishies will and the rid the tank of algae. The fish might try to bite them but the only problem I had is they hide in their shells alot and you don't know whether they are dead or not. When tehy are dead they smell REALLY bad.I had one I thought was dead and put it in a bucket to dispose of later and when I came back it was clinging to the side of the bucket.

Snails will contribute a lot of waste to the tank, they need about 5 gallons of water a piece. They are also, contrary to popular belief, not an algae eater. They will eat the algae and poo, but only if they are starving. Snails need a diet high in protein and calcium to keep their shells growing healthy and strong. Some kinds (such as canas) will clear out a planted tank in a night. They are worse than goldies when it comes to plants. However, other kinds (such as brigs) will not touch a plant unless it is dead or dying. They can actually come in handy to keep your plants trimmed back for you. Goldfish will nip at at snails, I have had a goldie eat a hunk from a brig's foot before. They will also eat the tentacles off of their little heads. The goldies think they are worms or something. When they see the long, slender tentacle wiggling it triggers the feeding reflex.

Check out this link for a ton of great info about snails. They have a wonderful forum there, too. I have been a member for three years and was a moderator at one point, but I went incative for a while (school, life, etc.) and they had to take me off the team. Good luck!

unsure.gif Just out of curiosity, did you buy the Red/Brown Ramshorns,or did you get Columbian Ramshorns? The two are totally different from each other. smile.gif

i dunno it said that they were ramshorn snails but i think they are brown ramhorn snails
Bob the Goldfish
The red/brown/genetically-created white are Planorbis Planorbis and naturally eat algae and not plants(unless that is all that's available). The Columbian Ramshorn is Planorbis corneus and WILL attack plants. They are much larger than the normal Ramshorn

How big are your rams? Do you remember if the store had the scientific name listed under "ramshorn snail"? Its possible you've got a marisa. Do your snails look like this or this?

If it looks like the first one you should check out the link that Lady D provided. If they look like the second one you really shouldn't have bought them, they're pests.
