Our pump is needing to be cleared out daily, sometimes twice with all the rain storms we've been having. Any tip for properly cleaning out a pump you cant open up? We've been flushing it with a high pressured hose, but the algea keeps clogging it up. The water is clear but with the warmer weather the ###### is starting to grow.

It snowed here last night - I'm in Missouri - USA. Do you have a filter in your pond - this helped mine to not turn into "pea soup". I still had a lot of algea on the sides but the water was more clear up until the end of summer. Nice pics too!

I don't have a big problem with algea in my pond. I do get string algea but take it off once a week or so. The little hair like algea that grows on the sides I just leave. The snails and fish love to eat it. As for filters, I have a fountain that acts as a filter that I clean out every couple of days in the spring when my pond is still cycleing. Then last year we made a 55 gallon filter. The water gets pumped into it at the top. Runs through netting that has good bacteria growing on it and then out into the pond. THere is another filter at the bottom that collect all the "goop". We have a drain at the bottom of the drum that lets us drain that water every couple of days. It worked great this year and the pond was crystal clear.
The more sun your pond gets, the more algea you will have. Also, the shallower it is the more algea you will get. I get way more algea in my 2 foot side of the pond than I do in the 4 foot side. I would suggest getting about 60 to 70% of the pond covered in plants especially since your summer is coming. The plants will help get rid of the algea as well. Floating plants do wonders at filtering the water.
Good luck.

Thanks for the tips. I do have a filter and it has the light to keep the algea out of the water, but the string stuff is getting into the pump. So I shall start removing that and see how we go. The weather hasnt helped. A week of heavy rain has overflowed the pond several times and dirtied it all up.
