Hi i have bought some Frozen Cubes of Daphnia. How do i feed them to my fish? Whats the best way etc? I did not understand what the bloke at the Aquatics shop told me to be honest...If you guys can help that would be great.

Some people put the cubes in frozen and leave the goldies to slowly take the worms off.
I defrost it first by placing in a shallow container with a little tap water and leaving until fully defrosted before feeding.

yeh that's what i do.

i let the cube defrost a little, in tank water if it's for just one tank or in tap water (with a little tap-safe usually, coz i am scared about chlorine) and then plop the half defrosted blob in the tank.

it floats or sinks depending on what type of food it is and how defrosted it is (obviously, coz ice cubes float!) and the fish can just nibble at it and take pieces from it, or catch peices as they fall off.

i also use a feeding dish in one of my tanks which is handy to stop all the food going all over the tank, works well with bloodworm and other food, including daphnia so long as u make sure it is defrosed and soaked through to help it sit in place and not float out of the dish!!

so if i wanted to, can i half defrost 1 cube and then put that into the tank? What will happen? Will the Daphnia go all over the tank? DOes it sink?

to be honest, i didnt know myself til i tried it today!

daphnia are very small waterfleas, and so they are very light. i put a half defrosted cube into my tank and peices came off quite rapidly, and floated around the tank. the fish ate them quite quickly though. eventually they will sink and end up on the floor/gravel.

if you have many fish who will eat this quickly like i do (i have a group of white cloud minnows as well as a common goldfish) then it's not really a problem as it will get eaten up quickly. if you have few fish and worry about waste a feeding dish may help (although difficult because the daphnia is small and light) or perhaps feeding small potions of the defrosted cube at a time, making sure it is all eaten before giving more, so that there is not excess food in the tank.

I have found that a whole cube is a lot of food, and have taken to half defrosting then splitting it in two, to share between my two tanks. but only because i have quite small tanks and fish, and obviously this depends on the size of your tank, how many fish you have, and how much they will eat.

hope this helps smile.gif

I have not used Daphnia but I do use frozen cubes of brine shrimp.

I also defrost in a little tank water.
I use a smally turkey baster type thing to slowly put it in the tank so they dont go everywhere in the current. This is fun aswell as the fish will suck it right out the tip.
Here is a pic of them long ago when I still had Fred having a feed. The little white tube at the top is the tip of the turkey baster thing.

Frozen? I have never fed my fish anything frozen but now I think that's a good idea. However it's more fun giving them live food because they swim all over the place so you fish get exercise. It is also fun to watch! hah.gif hah.gif
