Hey!

*sigh* I bought a new beautiful CT male betta at Petco on Thursday. His fins were in perfect condition.. no tears anywhere to be seen. No sign of any illness at all. Heh, and he was flaring like mad at a neighbor, and then at me when I picked up his container o.0

He has not eaten at all since I got him home I have been placing only 2 or 3 micro-pellets in his temp. home, twice a day, since THursday night but he won't touch them. He will follow them down after they sink but won't grab them so I have to dig them back out -_- I have also tried a thawed bloodworm and he wouldn't touch it either. He came up to look at it, but wouldn't grab on to it

Any ideas? Physically, he looks in very good condition. I know the ride home was very stressfull (almost a 30 mile drive on a terribly bumpy highway), so I let him sit in my dark room for almost an hour before I started to acclimate him to move from that small container he was in. I let him acclimate for around 90 minutes or so... I would add a little bit of my water into his container every 15 minutes after I changed a tad bit out. After the temps and ph matched I caught him in a dixi cup (the net tore my other bettas fins slightly so I didn't want to mess with that again -_-), and lowered it to his new little home. I didn't let the container water leak out.. he hopped out of the container himself so only a drop or two of nasty water was transfered with him LoL.

Since then, he has been housed in one of those little "Aquarium Totes" I got free for being a member at Petco. It isn't much.... 3 or 4 pints I believe I measured, but he will only be there for 2 weeks before he is moved to a 10 gallon with another male betta (they will be seperated).

The only "stresser" would be my slightly cold room. A tank I setup last night, no heater yet, read 68 when I woke up, so I'd imagine the betta's water is currently close to that... I warmed up a towl and set the "tote" on that though so it will warm up around 70 at least.

What could be causing him not to eat, and how can I make sure he gets some sort of food? I know the colder water is a possibility, however despite that he is a very active little still and flares at anything at all I set by him (he flares at me still also). When I QTd my other betta in this same way for 2 weeks, the cooler water did not stop him from eating (although he wasn't as active until he was released into the 10 gallon LoL).

ANy ideas are greatful! I don't want my pretty little guy to starve

No worries, I'd say just wait a little longer. He sounds like he's perfectly healthy and you've only had him for a few days. Sometimes bettas will not eat for up to a week after they are brought home. Just don't bribe him with live food. If you do, he'll become like those spoiled children who learn that if they refuse something they'll get something better Any names yet?

New Betta's are known for doing that kind of thing.Sometimes it's for a day-other times it may be a week or so. Each Betta is so different,that it's hard to guess.I've had Betta's that took almost a week before they ate.
Now I know that some people keep their Betta's in non heated tanks,and they do fine,but unless it was summer around here,my Betta's always seemed too cold to want to eat or swim around. If that warmed towel doesn't stay warm for very long,I'd probably just forget about it.The temp swings back and forth may add to what-ever stress he may allready be feeling.
Continue to offer small meals,and be patient.If food is sitting longer than a few minutes,make sure to suction it out of the tank.Hopefully,he'll be hungry real soon for you.Good luck.

Thanks guys Yeah, as soon as the food sinks (usually within 5 minutes) I just remove it if I haven't seen him pick at it.

Very true, also, I guess. My very first betta I ever had wouldn't eat a single thing for a month and half o.0 I was so worried about that little guy, but he eventually started eating and was fine. I haven't noticed that with the other 2 guys I've had and I guess I forgot all about it -_-

I'll keep offering the pellets and hope he'll eat them soon. If he does okay and shows no sign of any internal illnesses either, he will be moved to a warmer tank that stays above 70 The towl is no problem. LoL It doesn't stay heated very long.... 15-20 minutes maybe if I get it hot enough, but it's enough to keep his water warmed if I do that every couple hours.

A month and a half?!?

The very first betta I had, yeah o.0 It may have even been 2 months, but I can't remember. It was 3 or 4 years ago I think now LoL. I was so worried about the poor little thing! I was so glad when I finally seen him come up and eat the food I put in there for him LoL.

I am really hoping my new guy won't take that long before he decides to eat He came up to look at the pellets when I put them in there this morning but he won't touch them still *sigh*

Oh, and Kissy, I forgot!! LoL No names yet. I'm not good with thinking up names right off -_- I will eventually though!

I would safely say that he will eat when he gets hungry enough. He is probably still adjusting to his new enviroment. No telling how he was taken care of during shipping and all that. I am sure that he is a real beauty!

If I can remember, I'm going to see if my dad can bring him a digital camera from work again (he was able to bring it home for a weekend last summer). If he does, I'll be taking pictures like mad If he can't though, I have no way to get pictures until I can afford my own camera. Heh, with no income, it's not easy to save up -_-

I have a few names in mind, I just haven't had a chance to stop and think on them long enough. I've been swamped with computer problems and my mind starts flying in other directions -_- LoL

Heh, by the way! Yesterday while I was doing water changes on 2 of my tanks, I had a pepsi can sitting on my entertainment stand sort of next to the new guy's container. I looked over and he was flaring like mad at it! o.0 He's such a fiesty little thing! LoL

LoL! Maybe! Then again, he flares at the little picture of the betta on the food container, at a dragon figure also by his container, my books behind him... LoL He's a busy little guy!

Yeah, it is I'm hoping after he passes QT and he's moved to a warmer tank he'll start eating.

Oooh, I remembered to ask my dad about that digital camera from work. He said he will see about borrowing it again if he can remember I'm not sure when that will be though. He works graveyard tonight. I don't know if he can bring it home for the day tomorrow and bring it back tomorrow night when he goes in or not LoL. I'll be sure to spend lots of time taking pictures of my tanks and fishies though!

*squeels* WHoohoo!! I just woke up a bit ago (heh, I sleep in late *blushes*), and there was a note upstairs for me with the camera and software!!!! He was able to borrow it only for the day and it has to go back tonight with him at 5pm PST.

If I can get the software installed *glares at computer* I'm going to spend the next almost 6 hours taking pictures while it's here *looks around for more batteries* LoL

It'll take me awhile to remember how to use the software and the camera, but I'll be posting pictures of all my tanks and my babies finally *waves*

My bettas are on the 2 or 3 page I think. The Crowntail pictures didn't turn out very well because of the lack of decent lighting in my room. *sigh* LoL A lot of things came out blurry and a bit hard to see though -_-

That veiltail reminds me of a sunset.

I love the red crowntail! He reminds me of fire. The name Inferno comes to mind.

The Veiltail needs another treatment when the weather warms up a little more around here. He had a few tears in his caudal fin.. nothing really bad, but it makes me feel bad for him when I see them.

An update! My new little guy has built a small bubblenest that he keeps destroying LoL. At least he's doing something though!

Also, for the last 2 mornings I noticed after I fed him and move off to feed my other betta, I see the CT move up towards the surface. I can't tell if he's eating or not though. Anytime I get close he backs off and focuses on me again LoL. Hmm, I'll have to be sneaky to spy on him....

Just a couple more days, also, and the 2 week QT will be over. He's shown no sign of illness up to this point, so I'm hoping the 2 weeks will do and I can move him to the warmer tank. I'm sure he'll appreciate the heated water better LoL

An update I fed my little froggie today and I always give my Veiltail a bloodworm or two as well from the leftovers. I tried my CT again, and he ate!!! He ate 3 little bloodworms I'll try and give him pellets again tonight too and see if he'll eat those now as well.

Yep! I'm so happy Heh, I'll be even happier if he'll also eat the pellets. I don't think I could cut off a junk from those bloodworms small enough for just one meal for one fish each time LoL!

LoL I seen him grab a pellet last night, chew a little and spit it back out. He didn't touch the others so I went ahead and took them out half hour later *sigh* I'll go ahead and start feeding him a couple bloodworms for one meal each day, and I'll keep trying to the pellets as well

*goes to update siggy* My mom's work friend just left with her first batch of guppies and she asked me for 2 more batches LoL. My friend is coming up in another hour to take all but 2 of my males home with her. *sigh* I'm going to miss the little guys -_-

You will miss them, but it seems like you will still be able to find out how they are doing. That is always a great thing.

I adopted out a ton of baby brigs (apple snails) a few months ago and I was so worried over them making it to their new homes!! I can be such a mother hen.

Hehe, another update Yesterday, I didn't feed the CT a bloodworm.. instead, I skipped breakfast and gave him a few pellets for dinner along with my Veiltail... he ate some o.0 Whoohoo! It looks like he ate most of the ones I gave him this morning too. There are only 3 left up there floating (I think there were 5 or 6).

Yeah, I can check in on the males from my friend now and then. My mom's work friend I can't get ahold of all the time though. She works graveyard LoL. I can ask her when my guppy has her next batch though and I call to let her know

It is so great to hear that your betta is eating! Now all you gotta do it get him outta QT and into a tank and get some really great shots of him.

Half of that is done already He's been out of QT since Saturday afternoon. He's living in a breeder I had for the guppies that never did work with my other betta. By Sunday afternoon, I noticed the CT had calmed down a lot (he seemed a bit stressed with that other betta staring at him constantly LoL) and realized the other guy can't get in that container with him. It's cute.. My Veiltail built his new nest next to that container and they sorta sleep close to each other. LoL Heh, and I have a lid for that breeder so neither can sneak into the other's area.... Hopefully with my next trip, I can get an actual divider for the tank so the CT has more swimming room too.. at least he's in a heated tank now though and has some company to flare at! I don't have access to a camera now though, so I can't take anymore pics

He's eating pellets twice a day now too! As soon as they are placed in there, he flys up to grab them really fast. My other guy grabs his faster than usual now too. It's like they think the other is going to eat them first LoL!

Hehe, and off topic, my little wild froggy came home! This little wild frog moved into our "pond" a few weeks ago, took off for a few days and he came home on Monday afternoon.. Such a cute little guy, and he's kinda tame. He'll sit on my hand as long as I dont' stand up and walk off with him LoL. Hehe, and yesterday it was so cute!!! I went over to look at him and he hopped up, stuck his throat skin out and started croaking at me! LoL Weird little froggy

I can just imagine the little guy or gal croaking at you! How sweet!!! If you can, next time the camera comes home for a while you should get a shot of the frog. I wonder where it went? Maybe it was out partying with Kermit.

LoL I actually did take 2 pictures of that froggy They are somewhere on that site with the picture of the bettas and guppies (*pokes previous posts* I forget the link o.0). The pictures didn't turn out well, of course, though -_-

CT is still doing well! He's eating 4 or 5 micro pellets twice a day. I'll give him another bloodworm or two this weekend again

I have picky bettas. I have 3 males in a divided 10 gallon. I have to feed them freeze dried blood worms and missing one day a week from feeding. They are doing very well. I have one from Thailand that I bought for my own Christmas present, he was expensive one, a CT and an imbellis. My CT jumps if I don't drop in the food right away, so I tease him every morning and he tries to jump to get the food. I have had pellets and tried them but it did not take long to realize they would not eat them and I bought the blood worms. For a treat I give them frozen blood worms sometimes, I have them for my puffer. She is picky too, she will only eat blood worms and snails and nothing else. Every fish has there own preference, you just have to figure out what they like and stick with that type of food for them. Just don't forget, one day a week do not feed them. It is usually Fri or Sat that I don't feed any of my fish.

I couldn't afford a CT from Thailand Shipping was just a joke, and because I'm on the west coast of the US, it's not overnight delivery, it would be 2 night deliver for my location *sigh* I had mentioned to Petco when they opened about special ordering a CT for me. They never did, but I guess they remembered me asking for them because they always have 10-15 of them LoL

My CT is still eating the pellets! He's getting to be such about ad piggy as my Veiltail is! My other guy grabs those pellets as they hit the water and they are gone in about 2 seconds o.0

I trained my Veiltail to jump from the water to get a bloodworm. It's cute! It took him a little bit to figure it out, but whenever I bring a bloodworm to him, he hops right out of the water (completely out of the water LoL) and grabs the worm from me. The CT just likes to flare at it for a little bit and won't take it unless I drop it in there for him. Perhaps someday he'll take it from me....

How cute!! I can just imagine the little veiltail wiggling and geting all happy, then jumping out of the water screaming "my worm! Mineminemine!"
