Forum > The other fish > Koi / Pond

From all i have been reading , i think i realy , REALY , need more space for my fish . My little pond is 2 ft deep then gradualy gets shallow, it is kidney shaped
& about 4ft long , 2ft across then gradualy gets thinner.
I have no idea how many gallons of water are in it , it is full to about an inch of the top.
6 fish in it total , i was told they are koi when i got them . 2 are all orange , about 5 inches & 4 inches ,
These below just appeared , lol , about 6 mo after we got the first 2 , they were real tiny when we first saw them .
3 black , are about 2 inches & 1 - 2 inches that WAS black but it is orange with a black tail now

I looked at the black rubber liner material at Lowes(only place around here) & its realy expensive (husband will not buy it )He said his friend used rubber roofing stuff , Has anyone ever heard of useing this ?
What is the smallest size of a pond i could possibly get by with and keep my fish happy ? -- they seem fine now , lol , but the little ones will be getting bigger soon .

thanks for any help biggrin.gif

I've heard of people using the roofing stuff, i actually read that on some pond building site I went to. I've never had any experience with it though. If all your fish are koi, you're going to need a HUGE pond, thousands of gallons.

we have lots of room , it the electric i worry about , i need to have it close to the house .
I have a place that i could make a pond 7-8 ft long , 4 ft wide and 3-4ft deep.
i could leave the 3 smaller ones where they are now . other than that , i may need to find a home for a few of them . sad.gif

Aw, that'll be tough. I have a baby koi that I know some day down the road, will have to go somewhere better. I'm putting a pond in, but I don't think it'll be any bigger than 300 gallons.

i have to figure out something , i love my fish & i think
the big ones love me too.
the place i got them from wasn't much bigger than mine & there was ALOT
of fish in there .
the water was sooo yucky , you could smell it way before you could even see the pond . And the guy told us that he rarely fed them .
i'll do something soon , before the little ones get any bigger .

thanks for talking to me Erika

I've used liner of questionable quality with real bad results. Check this post for liner suggestions.

I used 45 mil epdm, the only other liner I'd trust for my fish is xenon which is suppose to be better. Both liners are guaranteed for 25 years. Other liners just don't compare.

forgot to mention, azponds.com has a very good price for liners. I paid over $1,000 dollars for my pond liner here and could have got the SAME liner for a 3rd of the price from azponds. I hope that helps.

You have approx. 120 gallons in your pond
