Full Version: Plants Are So Fun To Grow
Forum > The Goldfish Topics > Goldfish Tanks > Goldfish plants, & how to set up a planted tank
Fdragonboss
Just asking because I bought a plant at Pet Co today *srry if I'm not allowed to say a specific name* and the fish specialist was like you could grow plants in your tank, and I was like SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET and then I talked my mom (I'm really 11 could you change my age or sumthing) into buying one for me and then I brought it home and stuck it in there pot and all, just wondering, since I have gravel, would I leave the pot on the plant? would I take the soil and throw it away and leave the plant to grow in the gravel? I'm sorry I'm so krazy.gif , but I'm kind of new at this, please help me guys I'm kind of...... not wanting my fish to die AGAIN for like the 8th time LITERALLY, and have to get a newfish.gif because that would be saying that I don't really care about goldfish as long as I can buy a new one, but I really do, and I hope you could understand that Okay? I just wish someone would volunteer to help me and sorry this letter is sooo long, anyways, since I have alot of free time I suppose I'll make this even longer laugh.gif just kidding, I'll make it short, so bottomline, do I take away the pot and soil, leaving the plant to grow by itself in the gravel? What did you do? My goldfish don't seem to eat the plant, (only the soil... wink.gif ), also my gf names are Eyeball and Frankie. Am I overstocking? I have 4 frogs, 1 pleco, and 2 gf, omgosh I think I am, please answer my questions because i don't wanna have to buy a newfish.gif and imply anything thanks guys!

* edited to say omgosh instead of omg, thanks guys!! my bad!!!

well, growing plants certainly is fun smile.gif
As for over stocking, that depends on what size tank you have them all in smile.gif
when you say 'soil' what do you mean by that? As far as i am aware, aquatic plants only come in pots with a sort of material that looks like insulation rund them. The only plants that some in soil (to my knowlege) are pond plants. someone plase corrrect me if i am wrong though smile.gif
If they have ome in soil, whatyou have to do is take the plant out of the pot very carefully (i would suggest you do this outside of the aquarium, otherwise there is going to be a lot of dirty water) being very careful not to harm any roots smile.gif
then under a 'slow running' tap, wash the soil away, making sure you have got all that you can off... I would suggest that you disinfect your plant in some way before you add it to your tank, otherwise you can be left with snail / leech infestations smile.gif i know a lot of the members here use PP to disinfect their plants, so im sure someone can give you info on that. what ever you choose to do, make sure you rinse the plant thoroughly before adding it to the tank.

rolleyes.gif Well uh..."Tinky-Poo" has given you some good advice,so I'd go with that.I'm sure that Fdragonboss probably does have an aquarium plant because he got it from a major Pet store. He just probably assumed there was soil in it. It's hard to tell unless you take it out and open it.
So you're only 11 years old imagine that? laugh.gif You almost had us fooled. wink.gif
Anyway,I think we talked somewhere around about the frogs, they really should be in their own tank.I can't remember if they were ADF's or ACF's?
If you're talking a ten gal. tank,then you're quite overstocked.If the Pleco's a "Common" that's a no-no too. You'll need to think on all of that.
If you seriously want to learn and need help, all you have to do is ask, that's what we are here for.As long as you're making every effort, and following advice, you can learn to do this all. smile.gif I am going to move this to plants because that really was your main question. We kind of got off topic. rolleyes.gif

It is a 10 gallon and it is a common pleco, but the fish specialist said it was fine... anyways so I take the pot out and the humus like stuff as well??

Edited: Do I just take off the humus slowly or something, please help, quick!!!

I'd take all the soil out and leave just the plant to be planted into gravel.

What's more pressing is that ur severely overstocked, not to mention the common pleco and the frogs, which shouldn't be kept with goldfish at all (I dunno much bout frogs, but common sense tells me that they should be kept alone in their own tank).

i was considering getting frogs for my brother... and apparently if they are small enough and the goldfish large enough, they make a tasty goldfish snack. (african dwarf frogs.)

good luck getting plants to grow... i'm a big fat failure at that.

the people at the store are not the best at giving you information. you need to remember that all they are doing is trying to sell you a product. soooo the pleco and frawgs shuld get seperated from the goldfish and i suggest keeping to the 10 gal per goldie rule.

Yes, the frogs should be in their own tank. The pleco is a bad tankmate, too.

Most aquarium plants are fine if you take them out of the pots and plant them in the substrate. They are actually meant to be treated that way. Some plants will need a fertilizer, so if you can go0gle the type you have and read up a bit about it you will find out for sure. Or, maybe someone on here knows.
