So, i have this 6 gal tank in wich i would like to have a betta. I have a copple of questions regarding the tank and his tankmates....
1. This tank will have a tiny little filter (the plastic ones with just some cottonwol like stuf in it (i have no idea what the english word for it is..it is filtratiotion cottonwoll) and it gives of little bubbles to the water. it doesn't distrurb the surface too much, but it does give a LITTLE wrinkle. Is this too much for a betta to build a bubblenest? And if so, will not building a bubblenest bother him?
2. What kind of plants do they like, and what kind of substrate is mostly recommended for this tank?
3. I have a solid lid on top of the tank. Should i make holes or anything in it or will the betta be able to breathe fine the way it is?
4. Maybe a REAAALLY stupid question, but when you want this fish to flare, do you put the mirror in the water or just hold it near the side of the tank on the outside?
5. Would it be possible to have like 2 females and a male in a 6 gal or would that be the Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Thud.gif
6. I don't want to put dividers in the tank. Will other kinds of tankmates like tetra's keep him busy? Or will he be depressed on his own? It's not like i want to breed or anything..
7. This one if for the European members of this board. Where i live (in Holland) it is almost impossible to get a GOOD betta. I would love a HM or something with an odd coloration like apache or dreamcatcher or something. But how in the world am i going to get my hands on something special? Aquabid is not really an option as they ususally don't just ship one fish, or not to Europe, and because it is so expensive...Any idea's?

Thank you guys!! wav.gif

1. The water is probably going to be peaceful in the corners farthest away from the filter, and he'll be able to build a bubble nest there. If there are other inhabitants, he might not be able to (they'll be swimming around moving the water) but I don't think it would bother them at all. Some don't build bubble nests anyway.

2. Any substrate is fine with bettas. Any plants should work too, since bettas won't eat plants. It's all your decision. I have java fern and java moss in my betta tank because those are lower light plants, and I'm just using whatever light came with the tank so I don't know how good it is.

3. You'll need some kind of hole to get the airline going to the filter... and that might be good enough. A few extra holes can't hurt, though.

4. Mine never reacts to a mirror... but I'm assuming most people hold it to the outside of the tank. Not sure.

5. That would probably be deadly. Males and females should never be kept together. You could probably keep 2 females in that tank. But I've heard of many females killing the males in their tank. It's weird that I hear about that more than males killing females.

6. Tetras are good, you could probably keep a small school (4-5) of some neons or something with one betta. Any fish that's not agressive and doesn't have very large fancy fins or tails is good. Fancy guppies are sometimes bad because bettas get confused by their long fins and think it's another betta. Some people keep african dwarf frogs with theirs, I have some ghost shrimp in mine (although I think my betta killed and ate one of them). Bettas will be fine on their own. So you don't NEED to put anything with them.

Hope this helped!
