hello All, well ive had my 13Gal tank set up for about 3 weeks now and last week i added my (1) fish and a plant from my old tank.. half way through the week i spotted a small clump of white fluff on my bogwood..now it has spread to this...

it.. does'nt seem to be on anything else in the tank and my fish does'nt show any signs of illness. Unfortunately i can't afford a test kit just at the moment so as yet can't supply you with any water parameters..but i have a few questions:-

1) Is this a fungal growth?
2) why has it spread only on the bog wood?
3) is it likely to effect my fish
4) can i treat it with fungal growth medicine?
5) Whats the most likely cause

Any ideas?

Sorry Dan I can't help you. But I am going to move it to the tank section. Hopefully there someone can give you an answer.

yep. it's fungus. Its a fungal growth on the wood, most likely due to inadequate curing before you placed it in your tank. You could remove it by scouring it with a toothbrush under a running faucet (although this method is quite tedious since you can't see the growths when you take the wood out of the water so be sure to thouroughly scour the entire surface before you pop it back in otherwise, it'll just spread again). A method that worked for me to prevent comeback of fungus on wood is to add a pleco to the tank since its constant rasping activities completely strips away any dormant spores. It doesnt affect the pleco since they eat rotting wood in the Amazon anyway.

Dont worry, this kind of fungus doesnt affect fish. It could affect the java fern, though.

cheers!, was going to give it a scrub anyway...might remove it from the tank and give it a quick rinse in some diluted bleach...i not so worried about the java fern its probably one of the most robust plants ive ever had.
