hey i got an anubias, but the guy at the shop just said to root it in the gravel. he also said to keep the spongey stuff from the pot on it, coz it 'holds it up'. is that ok?? im worried coz Man Yu said:

the rhizome is the horizontal knobby stem from which the actual roots sprout from. Nver bury an anubias' rhizome, its more recommendable to tie it to a rock or piece of cured driftwood with cotton thread instead.

but surely if its in the sponge stuff surrounded by gravel then its practically buried??

i dont really know what to do. anyone got any good advice or pics??

Anubias need their rhizome free and exposed to the water column so it could spread freely and attach to rocks and driftwood surfaces. The spongy stuff it had been wrapped in is probably fine left on as long as you dont bury it in gravel. the anoxic (non-areated) conditions that develop beneath gravel tends to rot the rhizome.

tis all ok, plant is rooted (rhizome above substrate) and looking very green and lovely!

fantails have tried to have a munch on it i think but the leaves r thick and so worst they can do is a bit of a nibble round the edge and give up.
