Full Version: How About Mussels?

An option suggested to me was to get a few freshwater mussels to help clear my algae bloom problem.

Only... I have no clue how it would get along with my other fish. I'm sure the three goldfish would be ok, but I'm wondering how my two dojo loaches and the golden apple snail would get along.

It's a 29 gallon tank. The snail has been pretty much everywhere in that tank, including "trying" to go into the powerhead filter (he went flying away and discovered pretty quickly that wasn't a good idea). He's usually on the decorations or the glass, though.

My two dojo loaches (male and female) however prefer to lounge on the bottom, with occasional outburst of swimming madly around the entire tank.

The tank has an undergravel filtration system with a powerhead filter as well as a seperate overheard filter.

I'm wondering if I introduced a mussel or two if they would all get along nicely and not injure each other?

I've never considered a mussel before! Research on what they eat and all that I can do, I just wanted to know from experianced mussel-owners if this would be an ok environment.

I admit I know nothing about mussels, that said I really don't think it would be good for you to get anything else to put in your tank as you are already overstocked. The goldies (assuming they are fancies) need a minimum of 10 gallons per each fish. The dojos need lots of space to because they like to swim. Snails need 2-3 gallons just for themselves. Adding anything more to and already over crowded tank just doesn't seem like a good idea to me wink.gif

mussels will just burrow in the sand and stick one end out to put their filtering siphons to work. they're not really going to put much of an impact on the biolad of your tank as they are simply sucking up the present nutrients and particulate matter in your water and defecating it in solid pellets you could vacuum up. if anything bothers it, it digs deeper into the sand and comes back out again within a minute. The snail's not gonna bother it at all, since the apple snail is not a predatory snail on bivalves (at least, as far as I know)

Look around if there's a Chinatown or Asian market in your area. They're more likely to be found there than in a petshop. You'll just need a pair or trio for a 29-gallon

Hmmmm, interesting..... would they still be able to burrow into gravel? It would be kind of cool to have those, a cleanup crew that actually does some good laugh.gif

gravel? yeah, mine lived happily in my 2-millimeter particle black gravel quite happily. it was a layer 2.5 inches deep, I think

Hmm... So I might have to try some type of seafood area. I know there are quite a few Asian restaurants in the city, but I'm not sure about an actual Chinatown.
Hm.. Maybe I might even have to go to a Red Lobster and say "Give me one of those... alive!"

Ok, maybe not, but I'm sure gonna look anyplace I can....

I wish the fish specialist petshop was still in business. It had all kinds of wonderful fish, some I'd never heard of before. I don't think they got enough business to stay open. =(

At least now I won't have to worry about if my fish are going to bother the mussel, or vice versa.
I think I'll need to get some more gravel, though.

Thanks a bunch! happy.gif

just make sure to specify that you want freshwater mussels. they might give you brackish or worse, marine ones...
