I know its a silly question, but i just happen to cross my mind, and I was wondering, if it was possible for a female fish to have eggs, with out having a male fish about ? and what happens if the eggs are not layed?

Oh yeah, females have eggs without a male all the time. Its a natural thing, especially this time of year. And a happy goldfish is one that lay eggs or tries to spawn - it means that he likes the water, food and whatnots.
If the female doesn't have a male with her, obviously any eggs that are laid aren't gonna be fertilized. A lot of females will ay them eventually, mostly while bumping into something, or even a simple thing like holding her in your hands, if she is far enough with the eggs. And if eggs don't get expelled, several things can happen, and some of them not pleasant for the girl.
If nature would be perfect, the eggs are just gonna get reabsorbed into the females' body, and you will see a zigzaggy poop with lots of bumpy white things in it for a while. That would be the end of it, but unfortunately, that is not how many females deal with it. Some of them can just not reabsorb their eggs, since its a rather stressful thing to do, and it might take some time and a lot of energy, during which time the female might become very inactive and bottom sitting.
Some females are really trouble makers, and those eggs inside her start to desintegrate and cause a bacterial infection. This is not a pleasant thing, especially because by the time we notice a change in behavior, the fish is already suffering. Antibiotics, warmer water, fasting, feeding peas with epsom salt and such are a few remedies for eggbound girls.
I have heard from quite a few members who prefer males over females because of those potential troubles. smile.gif

Oh, and btw, there is rarely such a thing like a stupid question, so go right ahead if you think of something else... smile.gif

another question, for how long do your fast the fish, and how do you feed it epsom salt and peas if it will not eat at all ? unsure.gif

well i have read that you fast for 2-3 days and then only peas for 2-3 days. Hummm the no eating thing. try hand feeding. i know it takes some practice. at first my fish did not know that the green stuff was eatible. so i had to almost "force" them to eat it or try it and then from there they fight to get it.
