Hi everyone. Another new season to get the pond up and running. This will be my third spring to open up the pond. My good news is that all of my six fish survived, all from the first year. One, Nemo, was born last season. Yesterday, my husband came running into the house, calling my son and I outside. I had a
LIZARD JUST FLOATING IN MY POND. He was about six or seven inches long, jet black with about 12 bright yellow spots all the way down his back. What is it and how did it get into my pond. I have never seen anything like this around here before. Has anyone else seen it? My husband and son took it about six blocks away and put it in a stream and let it go. It was kind of ugly and I sure would't put my hand in the pond with him in it. I keep thinking "Where's there is one there could be more!!!!!!! Are we having fun yet????????????????If anyone knows what this thing is, let me know.

Hi again, I live in CT, and our home is surrounded by woods. About five houses down the road, there is a small running brook. I did not know lizards were from around here because of how cold it gets in the winter. What do I know. I did take pictures of the lizard with my regular camera. I don't own a digital camera, so I can't send it over the computer. Maybe I should get one and learn how to send pictures.

Hi, I went on the internet and found out my lizard was a "spotted Salamander"
(Ambystoma maculatum). I still think it's amazing he found my little pond. Have a great day. smile.gif

I would of freaked if I had seen Mr. Lizard also! Good thing he was probably harmless, The first thing that came to my mind before I saw your last post about the kind he actually was, Was that I thought maybe he had escaped from someone's house as a pet lizard. laugh.gif

Kinda odd how he found your pond huh-Maybe he was just a tad thristy! rofl3.gif

What part of CT are you in? I grew up in New Britian and then spent my high school years in Naugatuck. smile.gif My family have all moved to Oxford. And they are really surrounded by woods. I'm sure they have seen the lizard you have found.

Glad to hear your fish made it through the winter. Would love to see pics of you pond. yeah.gif

I have a pet spotted salamander, his name is Hendershot. I have had him for about 5 years and he is certainly NOT ugly...both me and Hendershot are offended.

Awww, that is the cutest salamander!! I just love their little faces. That was my first thought, too, when I read this. An actual lizard would have actually drowned in the pond.

We get toads coming into our pond actually! I would love a salamander visit. biggrin.gif

Spotted salamanders actually aren't aquatic, they live on land and spawn in the water. They can drown if they don't have access to land but of course it would take them longer than a lizard.

To Sandtiger and Hendershot - Now that I know that my Lizard was a harmless salamander.....His face was kind of cute. I did not mean to insult, but I had no idea what was floating in my pond (Could it bite?, was it poisonous?, does it eat fish?) I was clueless. My salamander looked exactly like Hendershot. Same coloring. I read on the internet that March and April they are breeding. Great I'll have hundreds of salamanders running around. This pool is really fun. There is always something going on with it. Have a great day. Blondie, Shelton, CT.

Don't worry about it, I was just picking on ya. biggrin.gif I would not worry about them breeding in your pond or anything, they normally breed where they were born.
