Hi This post refers to the post titles 'sleeping or not' which was closed by a moderator.

Firstly, I have a black moor with the same 'white patch' on his tail, I found him on the floor of the tank on Saturday morning with a clamped top fin (don't know the correct name for it). I already posted my water readings last week and they are not bad. He keeps getting this white cotton like growth on his tail and the fins underneath his belly. It is not ich. I have posted many times about this and on Saturday morning I trawled the petshops looking for someone who may know whats wrong with my fish. I have medicated with fungal treatment, this clears the white spot but it returns within days. I am now trying another medicine so fingers crossed for me.

I thought the original post named s'leeping or not' would have been very helpful to me if it hadn't been locked !

thanks

There were reasons behind the locking of that particular thread. smile.gif Truthfully, each case is different, and if you are having difficulties, you're much better off keeping it in your own thread.
If you could possibly answer the questions in red,we can go over it with you.
Make sure that you post your most recent water params(actual #'s) so we know what's going on right now.
White patches are not always Fungus, your fish could very well have a Bacterial Infection From Aeromona's etc. Post soon. smile.gif

Hi - thanks for this.

PH 7.5, Ammonia 0.25, No2 0.25 and No3 is 5. My No3 dropped from 15 to 5 within a week and I presume this has happened due to medicating.

My tank is 13 gallons and I only have the one Black moor in there and I think he is 2 inches. It has been running for about 5 or 6 weeks. My readings seem very consistent.

Saturday morning I found him at the bottom of the tank with his top fin down, he struggled to swim to me. I think his swim bladder is affected as he had a slight lean when swimming (Please understand that he wasn't in anyway on his side) but his swimming looked strange. He has a white fluffy spot on his tail which on Friday turned a brownish colour. The fluff seems to make a hole in his tails as the fluff appears to go through the tail. This white fluff keeps re-appearing and has done for the past 5-6 weeks.

My tank is a Rekord 60 and I am using the correct media, I am taking out the black one when medicating. My partner told me that he thinks there is not enough air in the tank so on Saturday we gave him an air curtain which he seemes to like, he likes swimming in it.

I also noticed a stale smell when the feeding lid is lifted.

A lady in a petstore told me to feed him live bloodworms once a week as he could be constipated. (I used to feed him 1/2 a pea every Monday). I also bought a live worm feeder and he seemed to enjoy them. He normally eats sinking pellets which I soak 1st.

As you can probably tell I am tearing myself apart wondering whats wrong with him. Any help would be useful.

Your tank should be cycled by now which would give the readings of ammonia and nitrite as 0 but yours is still showing a level for both these.
How often do you do a gravel vac as this is really important when using a juwel system with no other filtration. Juwels arent powerful enough to keep a goldie tank clean though the media is good.
Have you been washing the sponges out yet and if so are you using tank water?

Once you sort the tank out then the fish may well get better on his own but adding salt at a level teaspoon per gallon and then again 12 hours later may help if its a fungal infection.

Hi

I have done a gravel vac on Saturday - I hadn't done any previous to this. I only found out about them on here. I do have an air curtain as well. I do rinse the sponges in tank water.

When you talk about salt is it special aquarium salt - sorry for my ignorance in this.

sandy
Aquarium salt from the pet shop, you can get tonic salt if he has that or aqualibrium.
Its hard to tell if the tank is still cycling but try and keep the levels at 0 for ammonia and nitrites and do water changes as necessary. Only change the white pad if its dirty. Make sure as well that you get into the nooks of the filter with the tube of the gravel vac as that can get really mucky and cause a smell to form.

i dont have a jewel, but my friend had problems with cleaning right down the bottom of it since it doenst come out of the tank. i know that when he did clean it properly he found a lot of build up of dirt at the bottom.

smile.gif Sandy's spot on with the water params. If indeed we are talking a cycled tank then your Ammonia/Nitrites should definately be reading 0's,your Nitrates under 40 better yet-under 20. Because they're not,you are definately having a water quality issue which could indeed affect your fish with the symptoms they are showing. Most times,if you can get those water levels reading good, alot of these problems will fix themselves.
How often/how much do you actually change the water and gravel vac? You'll have to either increase amount involved in water change,or do them even more often to get those levels reading 0.It only takes a small trace of Ammonia/Nitrites to get your fish acting out of sorts. As Sandy mentioned,Aquarium salt will also help the healing process and to also aid in gill function.I'm sure once you get ths started, you will see much improvement in your fish. smile.gif Good Luck!

Hi

My nitrates are 5, so they are under 20 as you mentioned. I didn't think my ammonia was too bad at 0.25? Maybe I should do larger water changes then.

How much aquarium salt should I use and if I am also medicating would it be ok to use the salt ?
