Behaviour Ryukin - Gasping for breath, breathing at surface, swimming erratically and floating upside down at surface. Other fish fine. Both fish fine last night and feeding well on daphnia. Filter switched off for 11 hours last night. Noticed ill fish has been excreting clear jelly like substance sometimes but mainly excreting fine with no constipation. I have done a 30% water change immediately on noticing illness. had a death 2 weeks ago with slighly similar symptoms but that was after adding medications. Please help

can i ask why the filter was switched off and if you do that every night? switching the filter off kills any bacteria in the fiter so it has to kep recycling which isnt good for the fish.
Is there any other source of air going into the tank and what are your nitrite levels?

Hi Sandy I don't have nitrite test kit. I switch off the filter as i sleep next to tank. I have been switching off filter at night for years but realise it is not ideal. On the positive the Ryukin seems to have recovered after me being out all day. I asked at a pet shop and they thought I may be adding too many different chemicals to water(killing them with kindness). Done around 50 % water change to day so fingers crossed. cu Paul

I agree the only thing going into the tank should be water and the dechlorinator. You dont need to let the water sit for 24 hours either as you can use a bit of hot water from a kettle to warm the cold up a bit.
I take it you cant move the tank to another room?

Hi Sandy thanks for always being so helpful. I am lodging with a friend while in between houses but I will brave the noise at the mo. Fish now seems ok. Regards Paul
ps I think you're a bonnie wee lassie wink.gif
