~ Hey ~ I was wondering how many bettas can be in a 10 gallon tank! I would use dividers! I was thinking three?

Maybe 2?

What do you think!
Or do you think i should use the 10 gallon for tropical and hold off on bettas until i get another tank?

Thanks!

The 10 gallon can hold up to 4 males, I'd say.

I have mine divided for 3 males and that gives them all a good amount of space. I like to leave them some swimming room. smile.gif

smile.gif I have one betta in my 10 gal. He loves all the swimming room. He is able to follow me around longer!

alright! I will have to think if i am going to do bettas or tropicals!

Thanks!
Can bettas be with a female molly and a female guppy?

IF this is all i put in the tank would it be okay:
1 female molly
1 female guppy
1 betta

How do you tell the difference between males and females in bettas
sandy
Depends on the type of betta you go for, but store veiltail males have really long fins and the females are a lot shorter. Dont put the male with the guppy or molly, you can if you have the male in the 10 on his own have 3 cories with him but thats all.

If you get all female bettas you could probably get away with not useing a divider at all. If you get males I suggest only getting two and dividing it or getting one and putting some other fish in there. You have to be carefull tough, males will attack fish that look like bettas (guppys for instance) and a lot of other fish will nip the fins of a betta.

exactly.gif Oh when somebody asked how may bettas can you keep in a ten gallon tank, well think of it, each betta needs 3 gallons, so 3 bettas need 9 gallons so only 3 would be in a ten gallon tank but not to be mean or anything, you have to have a divider to keep two males or otherwise they will fight. Or have females, females do no harm. Or put a male betta, in a tank with other fish in it, but do not put guppies because they look like bettas to bettas know why?? Cuz the betta will fight the guppy. Also goldfish and betta don't go well together , goldfish may pester or nip the betta's fin until the betta dies so watch out what you put in your tank with a male betta!!!

One problem I had when I used a divider between 2 bettas was the fact that the bettas spent a lot of time flaring at one another. For most people that is a fun thing to watch but it made me uneasy. I figured they were flaring because they wanted to fight, which means they were stressed, and that would make them more likely to get sick if they were always keeping an eye out for the other guy! So....I gave up on the idea because I did not want to increase any factors that might make them sick. There is enough of that going around you can't control!

Does anyone remember those permanently divided betta aquariums? Why can't someone make those again with opaque dividers? Or even a bigger version of the betta barracks they use to sell? I tried using a breeding trap minus the inside stuff but would actually prefer it to be longer and deeper (for the water changes so you don't have to remove it all) at least. If we could only get the things we dream about having! rolleyes.gif

I really like the idea of the corys with a betta. I might have to try that!

heartpump.gif Kscolemen, don't give up okay? Think of something. Aha!!! Cover the divider with black tape so the bettas won't see eachother since the divider is cover with tape. There you go Kscolemen. No need to worry because I got tips!!! newfish.gif

The glue on the tape will give off chemicals in the water, which is not a good thing at all.

maybe try two dividers with a peice of construction paper inbetween?

I "worked" on this idea so much at one time that I actually had a dream I found the perfect betta condo for 6 bettas! In my dream it was made out of a heavy beautiful crystal glass on the sides and back. Each compartment's back wall was a 6 X 6 stained glass tile, all different but beautiful. Thre compartments were divided by a solid stained glass section and had a clear glass window for viewing. It was real pretty! I was trying to figure out where the filter was when I woke up.
Oh well, 6 x 6 is too small anyway. I have 3 bettas and they each have their own 6 gal. Eclipse aquariums. Lots of room to swim fish.gif !

I have a divided 10 gallon for 3 males and with 2 of the males I took out the plastic cover, covering the divider because one got stuck inbetween the divider and plastic. They got used to eachother and only flare maybe once a day. My halfmoon does not flare but my CT sure does. It took a few days but they got used to eachother.

Well my betta is doing really well, whenever he sees my hand full of food he comes right to the surface to be ready, since I place the food on the surface. Boy he is pretty smart for a betta! exactly.gif

I had two males in a divided 10gal and SOMEBODY *cough* Kasem *cough* kept "jumping the border" so to speak, to fight with whoever was on the other half. I'd be a little wary.
tinkerbell
i too am wary of dividers as mine kept jumping too. i ended up making one of my own out of an old UGF smile.gif i also dislike dividers as it cant be good for the bettas to be constantly flaring at one another. I would personally wait until you can get another tank. Although bettas do origionally come from thailand, were i believe they lived in muddy rice paddys, i dont see why we should still confine them to such small spaces. All of my bettas now have 10g+ tanks of their own, a few of them have some cories with them, and they seem to be much happier smile.gif
As other have mentioned, male bettas are distinguishable by their tails and also *usually* colour. Male bettas will have a much longer tail, and with breeds such as crowntails they will have a kinda 'forked' look about them. Veiltails dont have the 'forks' or 'spikes' at the end of their tails, but they will be much longer than those of a female betta smile.gif
i would suggest you wait till you can get another 10g and keep him in there. If you just have to have something in there with him, cories are a very good idea smile.gif
