i have some small feeder fish that i rescued from a pet store and i was wondering if a betta would get along in their tank, they're only and inch and a half at the biggest. if you guys have any suggestions i would love to hear them.

Bettas and goldfish need different things. The betta will probably harass the goldfish or the goldfish will harass the betta until it dies or even try to eat it so I don't think it would work.

Yeah, bettas and goldies are a no no. When I was really little my parents kept "my" fish all together. I had several goldies and a betta. The betta sent at least one of the goldies to its death....he literaly chase it out of the tank

I have to agree. I just got back from my LFS where I noticed an absolutely beautiful betta in a tank FULL of goldfish. All he was doing was chasing them around and flaring at them, it was like watching a sheepdog with a heard of sheep, every goldie in the tank was swimming away from the little bully. It was a funny picture, but in actuality I'm sure the poor goldies are very stressed

I have to disagree, My girlfriend has 2 golds and a betta and they are currently living in peace with one another and have been doing so for about a year.

They may or may not get along together but they still both have different needs. Bettas need warmer temps and goldies need cooler temps and they both need their own type of food.

No. Would you put a dog in a cow shed full of cows and expect it to be happy?
Goldies are cold water, voracious vegetarians who poop a lot. Bettas are tropical fish, carnivorous, have anger management problems and don't really like goldfish poop.

Expecting a Betta to just live in a Breeding Net,is NOT a good idea either. They should be allowed to have more swimming room than that.
I kept Small juvenile Betta's in a Baby Oranda tank for a while ,because of circumstances at that time. What it came down to though, was that the Betta's were real unhappy with the filter flow-way too much for them, and that they were also harassing my Goldfish.I keep my Goldie's tanks a little warmer than the average,so that wasn't a problem. The Betta's also were not eating to well because the Goldies ate up all their food. It wasn't a good experience, and I wouldn't advise anyone to do it. At some point it can/ will become a problem. Why look for trouble?

Just from personal experience, I have to agree with the no's here. I tried it when I first started keeping goldies and all was good for about a total of 3 days. My betta then turned into Jaws right in front of my very own eyes and went after the goldies fins non stop.

Needless to say he got his own home the next day and he hasn't looked back since.
Now I know it has been done, so I never say never, it all depends on the bettas temperment I guess.

I agree! YES! I knew it was no! Some lady tried to convince me that you could put a betta with goldies, just not with other bettas! I can now walk with a extra hop in my step.

thanks guys!
i was just wondering cause i have a betta and he seems so cramped where he is and i have a tank that is the same temp as his bowl and all and i had a friend who put a betta in with her goldies and they got along great and i was thinking that maybe it just depends on the individual fish's personality and i have never once seen my betta flare at anything, even other bettas.

You could put your betta in with the goldfish if it is female. However bettas like temps from 76-80 degrees and most goldfish tanks are under that at 65-72 degrees. I put my female in with the goldfish but do the the low temp she contracted fungus and died.

Up until recently I've never heard of not keeping betas with GF. When I had GF a few years ago, I kept them with a betta and they got along famously. I would say it would really depend on the individual fishes personality. But Im no expert here.

No you CAN NOT keep a male and female betta together. Even when they are put together during breeding, you have to watch these guys very carefully. They WILL tear each other to shreds. Just my 2 cents.
