I recently found out that my local goldfish store had a recent delivery of cute Sunburst Wag-tail Platys. I was wondering, can they coexist with goldfish? Platys generally require a pH of 7.3-8.0 and a dH range of 10-28 and a water temp. of 64-77 degrees F.

I'd be concerned about the ammonia levels that goldfish produce; can Platys withstand that? thanks!

smile.gif Hi Alex,I personally don't think that it's very wise to mix Tropical's with Goldfish. They just have different needs and such.
How big are your Goldfish?I know that with the sizes that some of my Goldfish are, that those Platy's would be snacks for sure.

I kept platys with gf for over a year & they did well together (the platies thought they were gf - it was so funny). Anyway - my gf weren't that big then so I'm not sure what would happen now. They were also in for a bit with my impared gf (celestial & pearlie) & had no probs but again I think it was because they're faster & the gf mouths weren't as big.

Now I have a tropical tank so they're no longer mixed. (I did notice many many more babies after I separated them into the impared tank - I think the babies were snacks for my bigger faster gf!)

THe ammonia wasn't a problem as my tank was fully cycled.

thanks a lot

i spoke with several other people and they were of the opinion that it depends on the size and type of goldfish you are keeping.

a few said that platys work well with telescope eyed fish than bigger Orandas etc. thanks for the input smile.gif

the lionhead and ryukin i was going to put them in with are only about 1 inch; they're still very young

I wouldn't advise keeping them together, sure they could live together but they have very different nutritional and temperature needs. Goldies like cold water, tropicals like warmer water. They need different foods to. It just isn't a very good idea.

Please remember that your goldfish will grow very quickly.
