Hi, well over the past month or so i've captured a few garden snails and kept them, but today we went to the pet store to see a cute puppy that looks like custard, (our other dog) when as usual we stumbled into the aquarium area. When I saw the apple snail tank i thought about garden snails and how cool it would be to have snails that live underwater! So mum and I bought three baby ones, there were a lot of big ones but i wanted to see mine grow up. They cost $9.00 Australian. They are all out of their shells and one has done a full loop circle explore around the tank floor, we've put in an algae wafer. We've also been told that it's good to give them vegetables so we will.

all of them belong to me, if we can get the camera working I would be delighted to give you some pictures!

Also i have a quick question. How do Apple snails breathe? Do they have small gills?

Congrats on the snailies biggrin.gif Do you know what variety of apple snail they are?
Apple snails breathe using a siphon that they stick up to the waters edge, so make sure they can get to the surface. They also like an inch or two of dryspace olong the aquarium rim so they've got plenty of room to breathe biggrin.gif . With three of them your probably going to be in for some snail babies...these guys can lay a clutch per week once they get going ohmy.gif This is a really good site for learning about apple snails

smile.gif Hi, Congrats on your new snails! They are so much fun to watch. exactly.gif

What color are they? I was at my lfs the other day and they finally had some of the colors that you do not see often. They had the common golden and then they had blue, purple, black and white. So beautiful!

Good luck with your new little ones! heartpump.gif

A clutch per week? blink.gif I wish! Mine have a clutch per night! I guess they stay really busy! biggrin.gif rofl3.gif Apple snails' respiration reminds me of a betta: they get oxygen from both the water and air. They have a lung that will allow them to survive out of the water for quite a while. They will also be the first indicators of poor water quality: they will try to escape the tank letting you know something is amiss.

Thanks for that info and the link guys.

They have eaten most of the algae wafer in 12hrs.

They are golden apple snails or mystery snails - that's all I know. Most likely the Pomacea bridgesii but I can't tell from their shell shape, they are too small.

One of the snails likes to curl up in it's shell and roll over a lot, is this a problem? He does crawl around at other times.

smile.gif Apple snails like to do a whole lot of strange things Annette. laugh.gif If he stays like that for a couple of days, obviously there's a prob, but doing it here and there should be okay.
One thing about these snails though,is that they don't do well at all with any kind of poor water quality,They'll either try and crawl out of the water,or you'll see them just laying on the bottom ,and they won't be able to close completely. If that's the case, test levels, take them out of the tank and place on cool surface for 10/15 minutes and some of their swelling will go down. smile.gif
That was a tip for any future probs you may see. wink.gif laugh.gif

Thanks for the info and comment guys.

Blue apple snails? Man that would be cool! But that doesn't mean I don't like mine

I agree with fishrpets, they are really fun to watch. One is crawling around on the glass right now, he seems to enjoy it.

I'm suprised they lay eggs so often! Do they hatch all the time?

Thanks for the tips guys. Sharon when he rolls over he appears to be properly closed, now he is crawling on the side of the tank again. There is probably some good slime on the glass. laugh.gif
