I hope this isn't a stupid common sense question... but is it dangerous to have something sharp like lava in a tank with algea eaters or snails? Would they get cut if they went over it?

I dont think it would. Snails produce enough slime that it would cushion their foot, and algea eaters would either ignore it or just suck on it lightly.
