Hello all

My question is about feeding, how much and what should I feed my Lionheads, thus far I have frozen Brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms, dried blood worms, sinking wafers and flake food. Im not sure how many times per week should I supplement their flake diet with the frozen food. They sure have been doing a job on my plants so I know that they are getting their share of veggies.

Hiya TW - it's funny you should write this. I've just been reviewing the diet of my fish.

I just made up a batch of gel food that contains vegetables and spirulina which I will feed a small amout each day (sometimes twice). Then to supplement their diet, I will add bloodworms maybe once a week, brine shrimp another 1-2 times a week plus they will get spirulina crumbles once a week also.

I think the key is to mix it up but also get as much goodness into them as possible ie. veggies, fruit etc smile.gif My feeding routine consists of 3 very small amounts daily so their digestive system has some time to break down the food instead of just pushing it out the other end (as overfeeding tends to do). And you can also add things like orange, banana, spinach etc...

Thank you JenW, I just came back from a fish store that I found from this site. It is called Pacific Aquarium located in the Bowery section of NYC. This store specializes in fancy goldfish, anyway I saw 2 beautiful Lionheads that were about 5-6". I asked the owner what he fed his fish and he suggested Hikari Lionhead sinking pellets. These pellets promote head growth and color enhancement. He also told me that was the only thing he fed his lions. Well Im a bit stubborn and I will continue to feed my lions frozen brine and blood worms but this pellet food will the major food I will feed them. I will post the outcome.

I honestly think if you can find a good staple and mix it up a bit with some treats then your fish will love you for it.

They sound like a good choice and I look forward to hearing how well they work biggrin.gif

I too recommend a variety...
I feed the main diet of Pro-Gold. It's a sinking pellet from www.goldfishconnection.com
It's a really good quality food if you want to check it out. My fish have really thrived on it. I also feed spirulina, freeze-dried brine shrimp, homemade gel food (they love it, but it makes the tank messy for a bit wink.gif ), peas (good to keep from constipation ill.gif ), bananas or some other fruit only occasionally.
I like to mix it up and see what they like best and keep them as healthy as possible.
What you're doing sounds fine to me. I haven't used the Hikari lionhead though. When I 1st started keeping goldies, I got Hikari oranda but it floats and you really don't want to have them eating from the top and sucking air. So long as it sinks it should be fine. smile.gif
HTH!

Welcome to koko's
I really don't know the answer to your question but I feed my goldies a variety of different pellets, Hikari Oranda Gold, Lionhead, and also Pro-Gold. I just started with the Hikari goldfish products, but i've heard good things bout them and they make excellent koi food, and the company's representatives are nice and knowledgeable about their products.
Theres only one problem that i have with Hikari GOldfish foods, the pellets come in basically one size and for larger goldies it probably won't be soo easy to find the food.

I love pacific aquariums, even though i've only been there once, they've got alot of fish, and alot of healthy looking fish, and they gave me a discount on my goldies.

Thank You for your reply GFandy, Yes I agree with you on Pacific, friendly sales staff took the time to answer all of my questions and didn't charge me tax krazy.gif

Im so new at this but I want to give my Lionheads & Moors the best I can.
Thanks.

Make sure you throw them a beer and pretzels every now and then. wink.gif Just kidding. I use the Hikari food recommended for my Oranda and have had excellent results. Mix it up a bit. I have no rhyme or reason to my feeding regimin. I give them a mystery meal a few times a week. Sometimes bloodworms, peas, oranges, shrimp and sometimes they will even eat better than me laugh.gif I will also reccomend San Francisco Bay brand Frozen goldfish and Koi food. If you want to see a fish feeding frenzy, try this stuff. They will sift through the gravel for hours trying to find every last morsal or until they burst... whichever comes first Hungry.gif
