I've had a herd (hee he) of ghost shrimp (4) for about four or five months now and two of them have died today! I am so sad. I loved seeing the ghost shrimp rumbles they would get into over food. I know they are really sensitive to water conditions but the water has stayed the same for a long while now. How long do the little boogers live ?anyone know? Anything else that could have killed them?

I don't think they live much longer than a year or a year and a half. Did you find their bodies? I'm going to get a "herd" of ghosties soon too smile.gif

Yeah I found their bodies I guess they were just old? Who knows, poor ghosties. I will have to get some more they are too funny!

Are you sure you found WHOLE bodies? shrimp often shed their skins and they are perfect replicas of the shrimp, it's easy to assume they are corpses.

LOL! This is true. When my pet crayfish did that I freaked out. I thought she was dead and I looked and was like...hey there are TWO now! lol silly me. yeah if they shed it could look just like the original, but dead...so maybe it was just their shells?

A Ghost shrimp that is about an inch long has already lived 1/2 it's life really...

I used to have a lot. But the fish would eat them when they shedded their exoskeleton. During this "jelly" state that the shrimp are in, they can also damage their own bodies when hitting a sharp edge or being pushed around by the current. Or from the goldies just nibbling on them. Thus causing stress and death.

Water paramaters play a huge part too. Those shrimps don't like changes in the water conditions.

The pet stores usually warn people of their extremely short life span too.

Yeah I am sure it was their whole bodies and not their exoskeltons. Thanks for the info Barbra, they were my largest guys so maybe they were just at the end of their lives. The others are still fine so I am assuming it wasn't the water.
