Hi Everyone

Over the past several months I have broke--my most recent one today--several aquarium heaters during water changes. Most of the time it is because I forget to unplug them during water changes. In all I have spent/lost about $120 on 7-8 heaters. Does any company make one that is not glass that won't break when I forget to shut off the heater during a water change in my quarantine tank--I always remember to shut off the ones in my 55 and 30 gallon

Thanks for any help/lectures for my bad habit

Lol i have no idea how you break them.. I only have a heater in my tropical tank on for about 2months a year in the middle of winter, and i never turn it off when i'm doing water changes... Its all good!

Oh believe me if I knew how I kept breaking them I would STOP--LOL--
But every time I always see the bottom 2" of the glass based heater broken and on the bottom of the tank

I have even tried different brands to hopefully stop it--but not yet

There is a titanium one that is made. I like it a lot. It has a thermostat that is outside the tank. But it, too, will be spoiled if left plugged in during water changes and it comes on when dry.....Because it is quite expensive compared to the others, you would be out even more money.
You are lucky that you or your fish or both were not electrecuted. Those broken heaters can be dangerous if you do not have a ground probe in the tank to protect you. I never run any tank without one. I had a cracked heater that made the water hot. I touched it and blew myself onto the floor. I was lucky....
I recommend you set up a ground probe in your tank. I will get the link when the internet cooperates - it is being nasty to me today.... and then set yourself up a checklist. Post it on the waste bucket or tape it to your syphon hose. A checklist that includes UNPLUGGING the heater before you change the water.
I worry about you. Money is one thing, but you are irreplaceable!

Have you tried the visi-therm stealth? I just got one and I like it

You really should try to remember to unplug the heaters before you syphon, but this one brags that it automatically turns off when out of water.

That's IT--I just looked it up--IT'S PERFECT for me--LOL--
Thank You VERY much

But I will OF COURSE unplug it from now on--just in case--I have already taped a big sign on the front of the QT tank to UNPLUG EVERYTHING BEFORE water changes

I just recently got a titanium heater. I really like the outside temp control.
http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/produc...id1=3231;pcid2=And the probe daryl was talking about:
http://www.bigalsonline.com/search/?type=c...s1=ground+probeI don't have one of these...yet. I do want one though. This is my 1st experience with heated tanks.
One thing that may make it easier for you to remember to not do water changes with them on....I plug the heaters, filters, lights etc. into a surge protector strip and just turn that whole unit off while working on the tanks.
Good luck at not breaking anymore!

goldfishlover, thats another reason why you should turn off the heater about 15 minutes before doing a waterchange. I heater that is off or unplugged can't electrocute, but that automatic turn off is more of a saftey net mechanism. Don't every rely on it to turn off on its own
