Question about Filters
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi
Just a question about filters, what I have now is a Bio-Wheel with a filter (called Eclipse by Marineland) and I was wondering if this was good type of filter or should I be using something else? I chose it cause it was very quiet, but if there is a better type of filteration system that I should be using please let me know before I get another fish.

Bio-wheels are an excellent choice for a filter The wheel keeps all the good bacteria in the water Also, aquaclear's are good too I have 2 of them and they are my favourite but the best kind of filter is the one you have, a bio-wheel

Re: Question about Filters

I was using a Whisper filter for my 10-gal. tank for a while; it worked pretty good. Then, I bought a Penguin Bio-Wheel Mini and let it run for about a week. Perhaps I didn't give it a good enough chance, but I was very unimpressed with it. Now, I'm using an AquaClear 200 for my 29-gal. tank. I like it so far. If anyone wants a Penguin Mini, I have one for sale..cheap =)

I bought a penguin biowheel 125 too and I was disappointed with how loud it was. I've had it 5 months now and it hasnt gotten any quieter. I also have 2 Aquaclear minis which I love. Also they're really easy to clean. THen I also bought a Whisper filter (I forget what its called but it basically looks just like an aquaclear). I just love it and I paid half the price of the Aquaclear. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in (and if you're wondering no these arent all on the same tank-I have 3.)

Re: Question about Filters

I have two 37 gallon eclipse tanks which have the large bio-wheel and I love them. However, these tanks house four Orandas in each tank and I have also added Fluvals to each one. The water quality stays excellent, visually it is beautiful and only seem to require a monthly maintenance (other than weekly water changes). I have smaller marineland bio-wheels on my 20's, 10 and 5 gallon hospital tank. They house tropicals and the tanks are great. I love the sound of the water flowing in the tanks.

Hey, koko!!!
Look at that!!!, I actually got it right for one thing...LOL
Right now I only have the one 10gal.. and Neptune was the only occupant at the time.
I'm not an expert but I think I lost Neptune because I think the ph level crashed. I'm not sure though, but I was talking to a co-worker and described what had happened and he believes the culprit was the ph level. I'm gonna try again soon but the fantails they had in the Petsmart near me didn't look that good, as if they were fighting or something and the the Petsmart near work had a dead fish in the tank, and so did the Petco, so I'm a little wary for now. I think I might wait a little while unless I can find a better place to get fish.
Also I was curious, is it better to use sand instead of gravel? Has anyone done this before??
thanks a lot everyone

I wouldnt use sand that will change the Ph level of the tank. I use what they call pebble gravel the one size down from gravel and one size up from sand.
Is the 10gal tank the Eclipse system?

Yea the 10gal is the Eclipse system. It's actually a 10 gal glass tank with an Eclipse system hood, filter and bio-wheel

Its a great filter once the bio wheel get astablished. I have three of these tanks. I think I would let the tank cycle by its self for about a week before you get another fish. This way the tank can play catch up for a bit and hopefully this wont stress the new fish out. Also when you place the new fish in add some Novaqua in this will help with the slim coat
