I have recently taken on a rescue goldfish with no prior knowledge so THANK YOU! for your site, it has been very informative.

Bobby is common garden goldfish who is six inches in length. He has a large tank with lots of plants and a log but does he need friends?

Are goldfish quite happy on their own or do they thrive in company? I think he's always been on his own.

Congrats on your newfish.gif and Welcome to Koko's! biggrin.gif
Goldfish are naturally a schooling fish but they can live happily on their own too. It all depends on how big your tank is. Being a common, he needs at least 20 gallons on his own. Bigger is even better because they can get so big and swim fast.
What size tank do you have? If it is big enough, and you want to add another fish, you could. smile.gif

smile.gif Hi and welcometo.jpg ! You did not mention the size of your tank. With him being a common golfish he would have to be in at least a 20 gal tank just to be alone. If your tank is bigger and if you wanted to you could add another goldfish. But just remember that commons need 20 gal of water each, so that would kind of tell you which way to go.

I have had friends that only have one goldfish and they seem happy. I just have always thought that they are happier with friends in with them.

Any ways, welcome and hope to see you around. yeah.gif

Ya,Welcome to kokos!

if your tank is big enough to add another fish, I'd go ahead, everybody can always use another friend. Or in his case, A friend.
But that's just me.

Do you guys really think 20g is enough for a full grown common goldfish?

ANyway, to answer your question it really does not matter if the goldfish has tankmates or not but naturally goldfish do hang out with eatchother so he would probably feel a bit more comfortable. If you have large enough tank go ahead and get another but keep in mind that common goldfish are a very large strain, capable of growing over a foot in length.

Thanks for all your great advice! I can't remember what size the tank is but it's big enough. I did work it out when he first came to me and it was big enough.

I'd rather not get him a mate, just because I didn't chose to have a fish, and when he's gone, he's gone. If he has a mate, and one of them dies, then you have to buy him a mate and so on and so on. But it is important to me that he has everything he needs for a happy life. He seems chipper enough so I think I'll leave him on his own.

He is very beautiful. He is very pale with orange lips, and orange eye and a orange band near his tail. He also has a few transparent scales, I thought they were missing to start with but they are there! Is this normal or is it from damage?

I enjoy giving him treats. He loves peas but hates grapes. I tried him on orange last night (after reading it on your site yesterday) and he liked that too.

Thanks for a great site and forum. Bobby appreciates it!
