I have been looking at these lights for a while, and was wondering if these are good and how do you select the right one for your tank? smile.gif

I have an 80 gal. and not sure which would be right.

Here are some that I have looked at. I know you order the size by the lenght of your tank but how do you decide the watts? 65 watts or 96 watts.

And for you that have had this type of lighting, are these good? Are they easy to attach to the frame of the tanks?

Actually the bulbs that come with the Current USA power compact fixtures are better suited for marine aquariums than freshwater tanks. I'll give a link to a post I did earlier on this subject.

As far as wattage goes... The choice between 65 or 96 watts is what you want to do with the lights. The fixtures that you linked to have either four 65 watt bulbs or four 96 watt bulbs. A 4 X 65 watt fixture would give you a total of 260 watts or 3.25 watts per gallon. This is plenty of light to grow plants in a 80 gallon tank. The 4 X 96 watt fixture would have a total of 384 watts or 4.8 watts per gallon. With this much light you could probably grow house plants sitting on the floor around you tank. Plus... the 4 X 96 watt fixture costs $180.00 more.

These fixtures are very easy to install on a glass aquarium. If your 80 gallon tank is acrylic you would need different mounting legs, but it's still easy to install.

Here's the link I mentioned earlier.

smile.gif Thanks Bak2it! Do you think that the 65 watt would be O.K. or do you think that these should only be used for marine tanks? I really like the look of these lights but do not want to buy one if they are only for marine tanks.

Do you suggest any other online store that may have the type of light that I want?

My tank is glass with a frame around it, so the light should attach easy enough.

I'm not sure how deep your tank is. If it's real deep, 30" or so you might want to consider the 4 X 96 watt fixture. But for a tank 24" or less deep, the 4 X 65 watt Current USA Orbit should provide more than enough light to do anything except grow coral or the most light demanding freshwater plants. I have a 2 X 96 watt Coralife fixture on my 90 gallon tank, and it's pretty bright with both bulbs on.

The Current USA Orbit fixtures can be used on either freshwater or marine tanks. It's just that the bulbs in the Current USA Orbit fixtures aren't IDEAL for growing live plants in a freshwater tank. I'm sure plants will grow under these bulbs, but not as well as under bulbs with a lower "K" rating.

If growing lush live plants isn't your goal, there's no reason why not to get the Current USA Orbit fixture. And if you don't like the way your tank looks or if you decide live plants is your goal, you can always replace the bulbs with different ones when it's time to change the bulbs.

Petsolutions seems to have as good a price as I've seen for the 4 X 65 watt Orbit fixture. I just checked Bigalsonline.com and they have the 4 X 65 Orbit for the same price.
