I bought a 125 gallon tank setup yesterday with alot of rocks and driftwood. (and I rescued 10 small convicts and three goldfish) The guy we bought the items from said that if we put the large piece of driftwood in the tank that after a while some tubifex worms would come out and the convicts would eat them. I really don't think I want this in my tank if worms would come out, but how can I disinfect such a large piece. It is 3 foot long and 18 inche tall. I am going to use PP to disenfect the tank and equipment (I am going to buy that now). Should I put the driftwood in the tank with the PP?? Will is stain the driftwood?? Should I just get rid of the driftwood?? I really don't care about having it in the tank, but it is really a nice piece and I would like to use it if I can.

If you put the wood in a PP bath I am sure that it will stain it. PP stains organic things brown.....This brown color might not be all bad, though.

You can set the piece out in the sun for a week or so, until it dried throughly inside and out. This will kill the worms. It may or may not kill any residual bacteria hiding in the pores of the wood, but that may not be very important worry.

I mostly am not a fan of real wood in a fish tank. It breaks down over time and can play havoc with your pH unless your kH is really solid and rather high. But htat is just me.

If you were to bleach it, you could bathe it in dechlorinator bath afterwards and then set it out in the sun to dry for a week. That would remove all the bleach that may have not been reached by the dechlor bath....

Maybe someone else has other ideas.....

It could probably lead to a pH crash, is that what you mean? I think in gardening terms that wood would lower the pH of the soil...unless I have that backwards...lol I dont know for sure, but is that what you are getting at?

Thanks! I will try the PP. I was going for the brown look in this tank anyway. My 55 gal is grey and white with my goldfish.
