I got two new goldfish newfish.gif and I was wondering their gender. Anyone know how to tell ifits a girl or boy?

It's not easy to tell, probably next to impossable outside the breeding season. In the breeding season males will develope white bumps on their head and gills called breeding tubercles, females will get plumper with eggs.

Yeah, so they say, its easiest to find out whether its female or male when during the breeding season

I have 2 fish that hide in the corner. Then I have 2 that swim around like they own the tank. I figured the 2 that hide are males and got scolded by the 2 females. Thats usually what I do when my girlfriend gets on me about things krazy.gif rofl3.gif

I haven't known whether my two fantails were boys or girls since I got them a year last december, but tonight I noticed white bumps on the gills of George, so I'm assuming he's a boy.

Fred (Frederica??), however, is showing no signs of the bumps and has become distinctly chubby over the past month. I'm beginning to think that Fred migh be a girl.

What is the normal breeding season for Goldfish? Can my two know it's the season when under artificial lights? What can I do to prevent breeding, as I am ill prepared to care for lots of baby fantails!!!

Well, with a balanced diet and good water, a lot of fish will get into the breeding mood - its a sign of having healthy fish in healthy water. Although tank raised goldfish don't notice the natural cues all that much - low pressure systems, full moons and such. And their temperature is more stable than the natural temp swings in a pond outside. Temperature swings are also natural spawning triggers, and the ideal time is now - the spring.
It also depends a lot on the fish - some never get the idea for their whole life, while others go at it every 2 weeks.

Looks like your fish got some clue this year, hm? Suddenly developing breeding stars is one indicator. If you don't want any fry, all you have to do is - nothing. The fish will eat their eggs if you don't take them out, and that takes care of the problem all by itself. It is rather important for a female's health to dump those eggs, instead of keeping them inside. smile.gif

My goldfish have never spawned before, though I do like the idea of little baby fishes! =] Either my fish aren't healthy enough or the tank environment is too stable.

my little black fish is swollen with eggs but i am not sure if there is a male in the tank.how can i get her to release the eggs?
her twin is fine i called them Mary-kate and Ashley. Ashley got swim bladder and got sick but is fine now but Mary-kate is huge and swollen but her scales aren't protuding so its not dropsy.

one of the other things u can look for is the leading edge of the pectoral fins...they are thick and kinda whitish on the male, while the girls have almost no distinguishable leading edge.
