I just got two new gold fish: orange/white. I chopped lettuce and placed it on the top of the water. The two ignores the lettuce. What do i do?

Hi and welcome!!
It is always best to not feed gf from the top of the water. Often creates surface eating which can lead to problems.
At the lfs (local fish store) you can find "veggie clips" they go on the inside of the tank that you can clip a big piece of lettuce to and they'll eat off it.

What kind of lettace are you feeding them? If it's iceberg is basically worthless, buy them some romain. Try attaching it to a rock with a rubber band or the veggie clip as Laurie suggested. If you have a magnetic algae cleaner you can use that as well.

You can use a garlic press to crunch it into smaller pieces, and then soak it so it sinks when you put it in.
The others ideas will help keep it in the same place though, they are probably better than this one, then lettuce won't get stuck in the filter.
