Since I have heard so many praises about koi clay, I decided to buy some from Bonniesplants.com.
That stuff is amazing! You can use it for a few different things. It makes your pond/tank water clearer. I never thought that that is possible, to have even more clearer water, but it was amazing!
You can put it in with your water plants as fertilizer. Just mix it in with the soil or other substrate you are using....
It can go into the filter to help along the bio bugs.
And you even can add it to your homemade gelfood! It enhances the fishies color like nothing else!
His ingredients are calcium b.....(something, sorry, I through the package it came with away), and you can find more info about koi clay on Bonnies website.

I normally don't read this board too much, but yes I use koi clay also. It is also a good idea too add it too their food. I guess you could mix it in with some paste food but I normally just add some too the pellets too coat them.
Disclaimer: I have only added it too my kois diet and have yet too experiment with the goldies.

My question is if you can use this on an aquarium, like 10 gallon perhaps?... Would be cool if you could...

Oh, sure you can, you just have to reduce the dosage accordingly, and a bag of it lasts you probably a dozen years or so.....

Come on Ranchu, tell them the truth:
A bag of koiclay with a 10 gallon tank will last over one thousand years. LOL

I sure can, Koko, as soon as I find it. Its one of the few things that still are unpacked, among others Rick's book and my hubby's favorite palm book! Of course the best things always wait 'til last!
I open a few boxes tomorrow and try to dig it up, and a phone call to the post office is in order. Koi clay happens to be a white powder, and I don't wonna upset anybody at the post office with an envelope filled with white powder!
No need for sending any money, it will be okay!....

well if koko is wanting to try some, I'm in the boat too! I just have to see if any is sold in canada. And where (it's a big country I'm not driving 20 or some odd hours to the coast just to get some!). Looks like more research!

I have some Calcium Bentonite, which is Koi Clay. Now that is something I knew about. There was one guy on Ebay who had some for sale. If you can't find it, a pond supply place has some. The color of the clay is important. Some is tan and some more red in color. If possible get the more red colored clay. I have a bag of it. I can get the tan stuff at my pond supplier. I am trying Koi clay in the tank (becasue GN is on medicated food so I have to wait to try that but we will - in Mazuri gel food). The clay I got was a gift and it came form Bonnie's clay - my instructions say to add 1 tsp. per 1,0000 gallons!
Most other people I have read about using koi clay in the water directly use 1 tsp. for every 100 gallons. Although you cannot cause toxic harm by adding too much, you sure can make a mess (called MUD) by adding too much...

Can anyone account for this discrepency? Have any personal experience with adding Bonnie's clay directly to the tank? Thanks!

I am new here and was interested in the Koi clay thing. I did a bit of research and... well, could be wrong but... it seems to me that it is "bentonite" which is pretty cool stuff so I plan to give it a whirl.

In case you'd like to try it and not have a millennium supply of the stuff hanging around you might wander in to your local wine making supply store. I use bentonite to clarify wine and it comes in a small envelope for pretty cheap. Annnd... while you are there, you might check out the syphon starters, clamps and who knows what. Interesting how various disciplines use the same kind of things.

Kissy, it disolves in the water, and you can't see it anymore. So, yes, it does get taken out with a water change, so you have to add it back in according to the amount of water you took out.

I've never seen any wine making supply stores. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one. I've wanted to try the stuff, but you have to buy such huge quantities.

Just thought all should know, I contacted Bonnie to she if she would be willing to sell smaller amounts...and she said it wasn't worth her gas money to go to the PO for this. Well, gee...being an ebay seller myself, plus her website she has...I am sure no special trip was expected. Needless to say, my experience with Bonnie wasn't exactly very helpful.
