Full Version: Update On My One Lonely Fry...

As in my previous post, I have one little fry rescued from my main tank in it's own little one gallon tank. It seems to be doing well, and today I noticed it has regular eyes with a pupil in them--so CUTE!!! Also, when it opens it's mouth, it looks like it's little head is splitting in half lol.GIF reminds me of the Canadians on South Park (not meaning to make fun of Canadians by any means).

I read somewhere on another site about feeding yeast wafers to fry? Does anyone know about this? Not going to try it unless someone else has...

Anyhow, this little guy is doing well, doesn't have to compete with anyone else for food. His spine is nice and straight, and he is starting to fill out and get more of a goldfish shape. Looking a bit less translucent. I figure it will most likely end up white or mostly white, because the mother is a red cap oranda and the father is a calico pearlscale (mostly orange, with a bit of black and white). The tail seems to be just straight, although the end looks like it is starting to divide a bit, looks kind of like it is "frayed" at the end.

Can't wait to see what happens next! I really hope I get a crown pearlscale! Mommy and Daddy are doing the breeding dance again, so I may end up with MORE fry.

Anyhow, just had to share with someone, as my friends and family just look at me blankly when I start talking about my fish... spit.gif

Its soooo exciting to see those little clear, strange looking creatures turn into something that actually looks like a goldfish, isnt it? happydance.gif He is gonna be one spoiled little fry!
Never heard of yeast wafers, maybe somebody else knows.... smile.gif

ooooooo yes, post pics! smile.gif I know mine is way too small to take a pic of yet, only about 3 weeks old, I think.

I think an inch big at 5 months is probably not bad at all, considering how small they start out! What kind of goldfish is it?

I remember what it is like to show fry pics to friends and they look at you like you are crazy or something. I have not seen my baby fantail for three months. I hope it is OK in the pond. I may not have any now or they may just be hiding. I hope, I hope.

I got about 40 fry at the moment. Only 2 deaths so far. I scooped them all hatched out of my big tank that houses their mum and dad and a little moor.

The little moor sucked one up, I flicked the glass and he spat him out. That fry is
still alive now. rolleyes.gif

Does take a lot of time up looking after them. I've got to find someone to
look after them in a few weeks time for a week - that is going to be tough
on me, cos I'm worried they will die!!! cry3.gif

The little guy (lucky) is still hanging in there!

Yes, it is a lot of work to take care of fry, however, i suppose it is easier to have just the one in a gallon tank. I still change half the water out once or twice per day. He certainly is well fed though!

I still can't see a dorsal fin, but he's getting a round tummy. I really hope he makes it, because i will be very upset if he doesn't!

Laura, have you added any salt or stress coat to assist your fry in protecting him/herself?

cool do u have any pics of frys i never sin one be for

OzzMosiz:

No, I haven't added anything to the tank. I change 100% of the water each day, in 50% batches, morning and evening, with a vacuum of the bottom of the tank to pick up any uneaten food. Should I be adding salt? I don't have any stress coat. And what am I protecting my fry from? I would assume nitrites? I have been checking and they are fine so far... however, I guess they may fluctuate slightly in the 12 hours between water changes...

Just want to make sure I know what to add and why before I start... biggrin.gif

Laura, the salt will help protection on their bodies. Your main enemy is fungus at this stage. I add about half a teaspoon per gallon. In 3 weeks I've lost 2 fry out of about 44 or so - one was deformed. at the 8-12 week stage is the bit where the strongest will survive. I'm told that some fishies hearts/organs won't grow and keep up with body growth and they just pass away.

k, will add some salt today! smile.gif

Lucky is still hanging in there, although I can't see a dorsal fin yet. At certain angles, I can see the pectorals, but they are really hard to see because they are clear. The fish is still mostly clear, but the belly looks metallic white, so I think it's going to look like mom (the red-cap oranda).

Once again, I hope Lucky makes it!

Another question, what do these sponge filters look like that people use for fry? Can anyone post a link? I looked at my local Petco, and didn't see anything suitable, so maybe I will have to order online.

Also, is there anything else I can feed beside the baby brine shrimp (which I don't have) and crushed up flakes? Petco doesn't have any fry food or gel food, I suppose I could order some of that also. May break down and get the hatch 'n feeder soon, as I'm sure my larger goldies would enjoy it too!

Thanks Koko!

I ordered some liquifry and and the hatch and feeder, so my fry should be well-fed. biggrin.gif

What about filtration though? I do have one of those plastic "small world" filters, that has the charcoal and filter media cartridges, would that work for fry? I can turn the air flow through it way down, and probably put a piece of panty hose over the intake... What do you think?
