Discus shouldnt be kept singly and require groups of at least 3 to feel safe.
I havent kept tham as theya re a very expensive lesson if something goes wrong and need RO water. As with Angels its depth thats needed and I reckon about 15 gallons per discus.

ahhhhh, nevermind on the discus then! smile.gif

have you kept angels? how many gallons do they need?

For a single Discus, you should have at least a 50 gallon tank so it has the swimming room.

I have not personally kept them, but I know somebody who did smile.gif She kept a trio in a 124 gallon tank. They are very spendy fish o.0 A lfs has them for sale sometimes down here for $59 each (they normally only have 2 or 3 at a time stocked there) o.0

Angel fish need at least 10 gallons each, preferably more, but need a tall tank with a depth of at least 18". Sandy and other angel keepers can give you more specific info on care.

Angels are a member of the cichlid family and as such you can get an aggressive one or a timid one. What size of tank are you thinking of getting and are you thinking of any other fish with them? As Kissy said, 10 gallons per fish and a depth of 18 inches but one can rule the roost in a 20 gallon community tank or two if they come from the same tank may get on but groups are the best bet and can then be thinned out on which angels get along together.
If you want one fish then it may become sullen and hide more but with some smaller dither fish it may come out more but really if you want that kind of set up then you are looking at 15 gallons.

oh, It's a 29 gallon (like the complete set-up that comes in a box at the store)....
Would that be enough for two? or even three? Theres alot of tall plants (both live and fake)in there....

But I think I heard they are extremely ph picky? What are their temp and ph needs?

Furthermore, at the pet shop, they seem so peaceful and slow moving---sometimes just floating there not moving at all but staring at me. but this pet shop never has very healthy water.... Are they more lively in a home aquarium thats properly taken care of? Even if they aren't, I still like how peaceful they are.... Seems like it would be much more serene for my bedroom than fast moving goldfish.... more relaxing.....

thanks yeah.gif

I ask about the ph because I'm getting all sort of different info from various sites... for example, one said: ph between 6.5 and 6.9 and the dH between 0.6 and 1.2.

What is dh? never tested for it before with my gf...

anyways, another site said all the way up to 8.0 is fine?

what should I believe? my bet is on the 6.5 and 6.9 range, knowing my luck!

These fish are sooooo brilliant, but I don't like having to tamper with water thaaaaaat much: thats why I enjoy my goldfish..... I know how to manipulate ph and get it to hold at an exact point, or have at least been lucky thus far, but it's just not my all time favorite thing to do......

What do you guys think about the ph range?
MaudlinBlithe
oops another site just said: pH around neutral (6.8 - 7.2),

7.2 would be muuuuuuch easier, because thats almost what it is coming out of my tap (it's approx. 7.4)

My own angels are in 7.4 and are fine. They arent so picky as they used to be as more and more are being home bred.
How deep is the tank?
If its 18 deep then you could get 4 young ones and as soon as a pair show themselves get the others out or try and pick two females. The females have a rounded belly as the males look pinched.

I'm in loooooooooooooooooooove.......... heartpump.gif

I kept reading until I found out why there was such a large difference in ph requirements: wild caught angels neeeeeed around 6.5-6.9 or somewhere around there. however, captive bred ones, like you said can stand much higher---even up to 8.0 according to several sites.

The LFS owner said she always gets hers captive bred (which they'd have to be right? they are veil tails..... hasn't that trait been bred into them?)

I thought I was alowed to get three. so I did. she said that if a male ends up paring off with a female, they may pick on the one lef out and to remove him.... I always have an e xtra ten gallon tank stored in my basement for reasons such as this (hey, goldfish are ornry sometimes)......

Anyways, my favorite is sort of like a smokey type (but slightly different than the online pics).... knowing my luck, he will end up being the oddball out......
his fins are longer than the others as well.

The other two are marble.... they are really small--smaller than a quarter.

*****************Their fins look alittle ragged on the ends, is this normal for angels? or should I medicate them?

BTW, cn angels withstand salt? if so, how much

thanks.

hey, do you currently have angels?
