Finally after weeks of waiting and getting everything together, I'm getting to pp my new tank! The water is such a lovely shade of purple...I love it! I'm so excited...soon I won't have to look at an empty tank. Can't wait to see fishies swimming in it!!! exactly.gif

Forgive me if I forgot, but it sounds like you bought a new/used tank and you wanted to be sure that it was properly sterilized, huh? Or is there some other scenario here?

Either way, if you superdose the PP in the tank so that its kinda hard to see through the water, then it will be the most effective.

It IS a pretty cool color, huh? laugh.gif

I think it's Potassium Permanganate!

It's a substance that many people use for cleaning/disinfecting tanks instead of a bleach solution.

It consists of purple granules which make the water look quite a pretty pink/purple colour but gradually turns brownish as it breaks up anything organic, thus cleans it smile.gif

I have to remember this. I am in the middle of searching for a 75 gallon tank and stand. The price of a new one is too high for my budget right now and I am considering used although I have always thought buying used is buying somebody elses problems as well.

Yes, pp is Potassium Permanganate and it does make the water a really bright purple color. I bought a used 75g tank from a lady I know and wanted to disinfect it before setting it up. She sold it cause she couldn't get any fish to live...everything kept dying. In talking with her later, I found out why she couldn't keep fish. The tank has two Penguin 330 filters and she threw away the biowheels because she broke one of the brackets that hold them on. She told me I didn't really need the biowheels anyway. They basically didn't serve any purpose in the filters blink.gif

Then on top of that, she was changing out the filter cartridges every week! What little bit of bio bugs she might have had growing in the filter was thrown away every week and the tank never had a chance to cycle. Her fish didn't stand a chance.

I bought the stand, tank, heater, two filters, gravel (this was a mess)...basically everything I needed except fish for 300 bucks. I didn't think that was a bad deal at all. I had priced 75g tanks at the lfs for double that price just for the tank and stand.
