i have a 17 litre tank that i would like to change into a tropicaltank.
how would i go about that????????? 406.gif
sandy
There arent many fish that would go in such a small tank, maybe a betta. I use a really small heater in mine and the tiniest of filters.

Agree with sandy
With 17 litres the only viable option would be a betta, which is not bad at all biggrin.gif they're interesting little buggers laugh.gif

i have seen them in the shop and they look great smile.gif
but they seem very expesive sad.gif

Bettas too expensive? Aren't they about $4-5 each?
sandy
In Britain you can pay up to £5 for a normal veiltail and £12 for a crowntail.
Ponderosa Power
Are those just so-so petstore quality or are they better? Maybe bettas are heftilly priced on Mars wink.gif
atryeu
At Petco down here, males are $3, females are $2, and they recently got Crowntails in for $7.
Padda's pal
yeap thats the high end price of normal store ones
nezzo
in the nearest store that sells bettas sells them at €13!!!

ohmy.gif I'm not familiar with that currency, but by the comparing prices that seems like a lot! Try looking around for more petstores

$4-5 isn't that much for a fish.
Ponderosa Power
Nick if you were listening, our conversation was that they were $4-5 in most places (pretty cheap) But in some places like near Nezzo they are a lot more expensive and that is what he was posting about.
claire_uk
13 euros is about $15 and £8, so i would say that is expensive, they arent that much in england.
nezzo
yeah, i'll have to check in town in the weekend...

how much water do you need for a betta??
Ponderosa Power
I'd say 2 gallons would be the bare minimum, but bigger is always better. Bigger tanks are healthier for the fish and a lot less stress for you because with a small tank you will be changing out that water multiple times a day. 5 gallons is ideal smile.gif

You could buy a 10 gallon tank with one or two secure dividers and keep multiple bettas if you like too.
nezzo
thats great, i can get a betta!!! biggrin.gif
nezzo
why the dividers???
can bettas not be kept together, do they fight??
unsure.gif
Padda's pal
thier are different types of bettas but the ones we are talking about are betta splendens also known as siamese fighting fish !! does that answer question ? smile.gif

Yes bettas will fight to their death if they are kept together smile.gif
nezzo
is it not just males against males???
atryeu
2+ male bettas will fight, and male + female will fight. I heard a group of 5+ females can do okay together, otherwise you need to go with just a single male or a female. I think I remember seeing somebody early in the topic mention if you get a 10 gallon tank, you can get a divider for it and keep 2 males in the same tank. My male betta currently has a 10 gallon tank all to himself until it's needed to QT fish sometime in the future. He's just as happy as can be with that big tank all to himself smile.gif

i was just looking at ur siggy and was wondering, what is an ADF.
it musnt need much space. smile.gif
atryeu
ADF = African Dwarf Frog smile.gif They are just the cutest little guys and are pretty easy to care for. There is an "intro" article on PetFish about them that has a few pictures. Here's the link if you want to see: http://www.petfish.net/articles/Amphibians/afrogs.php smile.gif

cool:D
how much water do they need??
atryeu
1 1/2 - 2 gallons per frog smile.gif If you want to look into it further, here's a couple sites you can take a look at for more info... I used them before I bought mine smile.gif

http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/mypets/dwarfs.html
http://www.flippersandfins.net/ (this one has a good FAQ page and a whole forum full of frog owners LoL)

Enjoy! I must have looked at those pages a hundred times before getting my frogs LoL The pictures are so fun to look at smile.gif Be sure you read over them well... They do have a few special requirements, but it's nothing hard or spendy to meet.

Also, they aren't *really* active. Mine tend to be more active starting around late evening but they are not as busy as fish usually are still LoL

I'm off to bed. It's 1am here. I hope the links help you out smile.gif
nezzo
