I wanted to give my snails calcium and I've heard that you can via cuttle bone. How exactly do you go about doing this? Do you just drop an entire cuttle bone in the tank and the snails forage on it or do you grind the cuttle bone to powder and then drop it in the tank? Big newbie question

I use Kent's Liquid Calcium. Put a few drops in everyday. Works great!! Its usually in the saltwater fish section.

Hi Amy..
I've used cuttlebone for my snails since it's nice and cheap. I actually just put em in the filter and let them dissolve away over time. Works pretty well too.
Thanks! The filter thing is a no go. I don't have a filter in the 10gal that the snails are in but I do frequent water changes. I will have to go and buy the liquid suppliment. I wanted to use the cuttle bone because I have a ton of that stuff (I stock it up for my birds).

I have a chunk floating in my 29gal and every once in awhile I scrape some off into the water.

You really need a filter in the snail tank, esp. if they are apples! I find that they are messier than goldfish! Mine are spoiled rotten and get a specially made food, and they thank me by pooping more and more! LoL! So pretty on the white sandy bottom! *sarcasm*

I have heard of using cuttlebone, as long as it is in the water and dissolves it is adding calcium. I agree that the easiest way is get a substrate like Agramax sand that is made of crushed coral for calcium or add the liquid calcium every day. I hate to admit that I just threw away a bottle that was 3/4 full the other day. I was cleaning and decided I no longer needed it since the agramax keeps the hardness and pH up to par by itself. I could have sent it to you! It's easy to find tho in any LFS with a saltwater section. Your snails will thank you.
