Full Version: Sword Isn't Doing Well Already :(

Ponderosa Power
I bought a swordish type of plant along with others a few weeks ago and its dying now sad.gif It had this shoot that went up 10" with baby plants on it, so I cut and planted those babies. The little ones are doing fine, but the mom plant's leaves are turning yellow and brown sad.gif

There is also this yucky white fuzzy stuf on some of the plants and driftwood. Whats going on? *please don't be mold*

The other plants are doing alright, the hornwort and vals are doing okay and the java ferns are sprouting lots of lovely new (and undamaged) leaves.
Ponderosa Power
Anyone? One whole leaf is gone now, its all brown and see-thru. Other leaves are starting to turn sad.gif

Did the large sword have many roots when you planted it?
Ponderosa Power
I'm not sure... its still in the sponge basket. There are some roots poking thru the botton of the sponge.

This is the best picture I've got, and my paarents just left on a ski trip with the camera. The sick sword is in the back center. Its babies are in the front center and doing fine. Maybe it has to do with the the lighting? I've got 1.9W per gallon and the mom sword is right under the light.

I would take it out of the basket and carefully expose the roots. Cut off any mushy ones and trim any really long roots back to about 2 - 2 1/2 inches, or so. Then plant in the gravel. I would also push a couple of root tabs in around the roots smile.gif

Oh, I forgot to say, I don't think it is the light. Swords like a fair amount of light.

Okay I'll go do that now, I've got to do a big water change and clean the driftwood anyway. I still have those unopened Jungle tabs...should I just use those now or wait a week until I can return them and get the Flourish tabs I saw at petsmart?

Edit: should I cut off that dead leaf?
touchofsky
Yes, trim off the dead leaf right down to the base. I would go ahead and use the Jungle tabs. I have used other brands other tabs besides Flourish over the years smile.gif

To ease your concern, you could try reading post #15 in your other "I finally got them" thread. wink.gif

kissy: have you tried burry the plant? my amazons are doing okay. i'm using seachem flourish with iron and its been holding up very well. some of the leaves by the heater are turning yellow, but the rest are still very green. i give them plenty of light from 8am-12pm and 5pm-11pm

I think you guys were right about the submersed/emersed leaves thing. I looked closer and it seems that all the smaller newer leaves are longer and pointer indicating the submersed leaves, and they look pretty healthy. Also, all the big round leaves are starting to yellow and brown like that first. The babies I have planted in front have nice green submersed leaves. Now that I found out exactly what these guys are, I don't think I can keep them very long. I knew the amazons grew huge and were only suitable for large tanks and bright light, so I purposely avoided plants that had those leaves and chose this nice, round leafed plant for my little 10 gallon. blink.gif *sigh*

Yes I burried the roots in the gravel and it seems to be doing fine. I put a Jungle Labs Root Tab under the clumps of plants for a total of four, and I dose the Seachem fertilizer every day now, and I am starting to see better growth on some of my plants. I realized that my softened water probably got rid of all those metals and trace elements that my plants need!! Does anyone else use softened water for their planted tanks?

Fondoo, you have such a nice goldie tank smile.gif Those Amazon Swords look so healthy and beautiful. They add an interesting focal point too.

hey Kissy, was reading about your problems with the white fuzzy stuff on the driftwood, this is a harmless fungus that is living off the dead wood, you can keep it under control by adding a bristlenose or two, they devour the stuff! I had this big bit of driftwood in my tropical tank for yonks, and it started growing the white stuff while I was cycling the tank, I got a bit worried but I asked my lfs and they said that it'd be fine, it was! I got rid of my tropical fish (I'm using the tank for a frog set up now) and all of a sudden the log fungussed up again... smile.gif

Oh thanks Tosakin! I scrubbed the hell outta that driftwood and it started to come back after 24 hours blink.gif So I'm assuming its harmless and just unsightly if fish eat it? Turns out I'm having a lot of unsightly things in my tank (brown aglea, beginings or hair algea, maybe blue-green algea, fungus) it seems like a brittlenose would be the answer to most of these problems but I simply don't have room sad.gif Its only a 10 gallon and I have/plan to have 6 black neons, a honey gourami, and some ghost shrimp. I've got more than enough bio-media in my filter, but I still don't want to overcrowd them. I think the only thing I could fit would be an otto or two, but I think it would be a bit much, and I've heard they are finicky about their algea types. Do you think the ghost shrimp will eat the fungus and agleas?
