I just got two new red cap orandas and I've heard that goldfish like to eat lettuce, but how do you feed it too them? I've found that it just floats if you tear it into small pieces for them and my fish can't get it from the top of the water. Do i just put a big piece into their tank for them?

thanks for any help!!

I have found that my goldfish totally ignore lettuce. I have heard the same from others too. If you are going to feed lettuce, feed romaine or other darker colored greens.

Make sure you rinse it REALLY well. If it were me Id tear it into little bite sized pieces. Goldies like peas a lot more though. You can get a bag of frozed peas (no salt added) and thaw a few in a cup. Then take the pea and squeeze the inside out in your tank and discard the shell. smile.gif Mine absolutly gobbled them up yesterday.

Good luck with the lettuce. Let us know how your fishies liked it and what kind you used.

All of my fish totally ignore it aswell...you can put any thing else in there and they will show more intrest than they do to any greens.

Mine love any kind of greens. I nuke them, just long enough to wilt, in some tank water. Then I use a sharp knife and make slits in the leaf parallel to the veins. Then it's just put them in a veggie clip, stick it in the tank and watch the show.

What I do is rinse the lettuce, place it on a styrofoam plate and put it in the freezer for about an hour to soften it [I do this for all the fruits and veggies for my fish]. Then I take it out, let it thaw [only takes a minute or two], attatch a veggie clip [$2 at the petstore] and stick it in the tank. I usually put a whole leaf in there -- for 2 small goldfish and a snail -- and it's gone in a few hours. It might take a while for the fish to realize that it's food if they're used to pellets or flakes. But sooner than later they'll start nibblin' away and will love it. I love feeding my guys fresh veggies and fruits.

my fish have nibbled a bit at the lettuce but not much, so i think i'm definitely gonna try giving them peas, hopefully they'll like it better!
