Well not everyone needs a cleaning fish. Most plecos etc do a good job at cleaning up algea, but most types of algea are either not harmful at all or actually good for the tank. Remember once you have that tub set up you'll need to make sure the surface of the water is 3-4 inches from the rim so your fish won't be as tempted to jump. Try filling up the tub with a clean 1 gal milk jug to the right height to know exactly how many gallons it will hold...you might not have enough room for another fish. Wait until you have your test kit, your tank is cycled, you've got your goldfish, and the tank is healthy and mature before you consider. Honestly I don't think you'll even need one to clean algea because tubs are pretty dark to begin with. I heard you mention something about owning cleaner fish means you don't have to clean out the tank as much. If this is what you meant, it is not true. They do not eat waste; they eat algea....and produce more waste. Not a lot compared to the goldfish mind you, but they do contribute.

How are you planning on "getting rid of" your snails?

i was gonna say Dean, you really shouldntjust 'get rid'# of your snails because you want something else sad.gif

If you are thinking along the lines of something to help keep down the algae, a goldfish will help you there. Mine used to eat it off the sides of the tank and it would stay pretty clean. They would also shift through the gravel to find food they missed. At least, mine always did. They'd grab the gravel and spit it at the glass sides for a couple hours after each meal -_- LoL

i was either going to find a good home for them or i was going to give them back to the pet stores! they are the little brown ones, so if anyone is interested just let me know. i do not think i need a cleaining fish becuase now the tank is clean and i am waiting to finish the cycle so i can add the goldfish. thanks again for all your help. any suggestions on what type of goldfish to get?

Dean, this is getting really out of hand. As i have said - it is totally irresponsible to just get rid of your current snails / fish because you are bored and want something else now. redcard.gif
goldies are so much more work than tropicals, and without meaning to sound too harsh, i really think you need to work up to them for their sake.

How are you going about cycling the tank? You ended up getting a Test Kit ,right? What size filter will be on this tub/tank?
Think your choices through thoroughly Dean,Pets are NOT "Throwaways".Only meaning that if you don't plan on keeping them very long because you happen to want something else, everytime you turn around,it is not fair to the pets that you plan on getting. Why don't you just make more time to really look over your equipment/tanks/needs,etc,and go from there. If you spend more time on really researching fish/snails,etc.,maybe then you'll really know what's best for you,and you won't be constantly looking for something new to amuse you.

i have going to get a filter that has 140 gph first and then i am going to get 2 of those one for each tub and i am doing the fishless cycle and i am on day 4 with that but they are going good because i only have one set up along with my 10 gallon. i am not getting rid of any of my fish i am just trying to find good homes for my little brown snails that keep breeding so that is the only that i am giving away and me and Laurie P have talked abotu the tropicals and i might find them a good home so the goldfish can go in the 10 gallon becuase i want a light on the goldfish and with the tub it will not be possible so that was the only reason that i was trying to find a good home for the snails, and if it was possible then i was going to try to find good homes for the tropicals so then the goldfish could go into the tank with the light so i can have more light on them. that was the only reason that i was going to get rid of the snails and fish. thanks for helping me think throguh my choices as i am not sure i was thinking so clearly. thanks again for all the help becuase i am not a good fish keeper, well not in that way, but in the information way so i guess i am then:( bad for the fish but i am learning and this site is helping me a lot:) thanks again for always being there for me and helping me when i need help even when i am having a rough time.

thanks again smile.gif

laurie suggested getting RID of a molly, a guppy, a cory, and a bunch of snails so that you could put a fancy goldfish in a 10 gallon tank with a light?

now i would ever question the experience and expertise of a mod on here, so i'm wondering if you're sure you have that right dean? As someone who's followed your posts about this tank closely, i don't so much think that's a great idea for you (while trying to learn maturity, care taking, and the permanance of a pet's complete reliance on you). i'd hate to see you get a fancy goldfish, then decide after a few months that anole lizards are so much cooler and would go great in your 10 gallon. you know what i mean?

i guess the final decisision is up to you about what you want to do, but i know we're all hoping you make the best decision for you and your pets.

also, i'm a little confused. do you or do you not have a filter running on the rubbermaid tub AND your ten gallon right now?
