I have a Penguin BioWheel Power Filter (Modeal 100 - For a 10gallon), and I was wondering if there was any way to quiet it down some? The filter itself is very quiet, but the water going back into the tank is really loud. I think it's the loudest filter I've had. I didn't know if I could slow the water down somehow or what....? Any suggestions?

Is there a "long" waterfall from the filter to the water surface? If so you can raise the water level see if this helps.

That may help some, but not a lot b/c the water level is already pretty high. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is.

It's plain and simple fact... Falling water makes noise. You can fill your tank up to the bottom of the hood flange of the rim on the top of the tank.

Some people might suggest putting some filter floss across the filter return, but I don't suggest this for a couple of reasons; one, you're filter is the bare minimum required for a 10 ga tank so you don't want to reduce the flow and second is because if the floss clogs up you can end up flooding your floor.

Try rising the water level, if this doesn't make the filter quiet enough to suit you, you'll probably have to try another brand of filter.

lol...I know falling water makes noise. smile.gif I just haven't had a filter that makes the falling water this noisy. I didn't know if there was a way to reduce the speed of the water falling or whatnot.....but if not, that's fine. I'll deal. Just thought I'd ask.

How old is the filter? The reason I ask is because I had the same problem with a Penguin 350. I took out the wheels and it was 90% better. Then unlike your typical male blink.gif , I read the directions. It said the wheels will make oise for 24 to 48 hours. They now have been in there for 48 hours and it dramticly got quieter. Give the wheels some time to soak up water and they will be better. Im sure they will get quieter with age once they get heavier and heavier with water and bacteria.
