I have two female "dwarf" platies in 2.5 gl. tank. They good filtration and yes I know I'm pushing the limits of overstocking.
I "dwarf" because thats what they were labeled at the store. I don't know if they are just young or if they really are a dwarf species. Can anyone confirm that they are?
I had a male, but he basically was DOA from the pet shop. He never was healthy and died after only a day. So, I'm assuming that my platies came to me pregnant. They have, over the last month, grown and have looked more and more pregnant.
Yesterday, one of the girls, I don't know which, had some fry. The tank is small and there are not many decorations so many may have been eaten, IDK. I was able to scoop out three one day-old sized platy fry. Actually they were smaller than average, this must be beacause they are a dwarf species.
Know I want to know why there were only three. Platies normally have 20-70 fry.
Heres my guesses.
1) Some were eaten by the parents (also two snails).
2) The rest will be released over a extended period of time.
3) The day was hot. The tank got over 80 F (normally 74 f). The heat led to a premature release of fry.
4) Dwarf platies have less fry.
Thats all I got. Gotta go. Help, advice, and guesses are welcomed.
