I am thinking of getting a Sea Clear Eclipse 30 show tank and was wondering if any of you have had any experince with one. I recently was given a pearscale and then I was naughty and got a blue oranda (they're both tiny tiny and are in a 10 gallon I know I know) and would like to get a 30 gallon for them with my tax return. Is this a good tank?

If I am not mistaken, The seaclear is an acrylic tank. I made the mistake of acrylic before and it scratches with the slightest brush with gravel. I cant speak for the tank overall but I perfer glass over acrylic.

I think, if I remember correctly, that Koko has one of these....

Eclipse tanks have the filter built into the hood -with biowheels. In the smaller tanks there is a well where the water runs over and through a blue flossed cartridge and over a biowheel. That is all the bio-base available for the beneficial bacteria to colonate.

This works very well for tropicals, but goldies need just a bit more.

Your little guys are not going to have a problem at all. But I think I would recommend that you get yourself a small container of some sort of biomedia of your choice - ceramic cylindars, sintered glass, lava rock, etc - place it in a bag and set that bag on top of the blue filter cartridge. There is room up there. The water will run over the biomedia, through the cartridge, over the biowheel and out into the tank. By pumping up the area that the beneficial bacteria can colonate, you will be able tosupport your fish even when they turn into big bruisers!

An Eclipse is a pretty tank. As noted above, use only acrylic rated cleaning pads on it. Other than that - enjoy! smile.gif

The system you're looking at is a SeaClear 29 gallon (30" X 12" X 18") acrylic aquarium with a Marineland Eclipse 3 combination hood, light and filter.

SeaClear makes a MUCH better acrylic aquarium than the Marineland Eclipse aquariums. SeaClear aquariums are hand crafted out of cast acrylic sheet. The Marineland Eclipse aquariums are made in molds, which is an inferior process.

Acrylic aquariums are not as scratch resistant as glass. But with a little care, an acrylic aquariums, made from cast acrylic sheet, will still be beautiful years after the silicon holding a glass tank together looks like crap. If you do scratch an acrylic aquarium it's very easy to polish out the scratch. If you scratch a glass aquarium... The scratch is there forever.

I agree with Daryl, you can get better filters than the one contained in the Eclipse system 3 hood. Even if it is rated at 250 GPH. If you do choose to go this route, you can add additional biological media in the filter cartridges, in the area where the carbon is located, and in the tray under the cartridge, or as Daryl suggested on top of the cartridge.

Ok so the Sea Clear tank good but I should get a different hood/filtration system is that what y'all are saying? Who makes a selfcontained hood filtration system that's like an Eclipse? I really like the idea of the compact tank and I really do want an acrylic tank I think with all the moving I'll be doing over the next few years it's the way to go.

The hood will be fine - but you should add extra biomedia for that tank. smile.gif

oh, okay I'll get some ceramic tubey things to go with it! Thanks for all the help! Oh and another question can I use the ceramic tubey things that are in my 55 gallon to help cycle the new tank when I get it?
daryl
Most decidedly. smile.gif

Great. Thanks Daryl. Now I must wait on the tax return. dry.gif

Heya - Is this what you are thinking of getting?

Nice! yeah.gif I checked out the details on this tank with Sea Clear - it seems there is a slit in the back behind the hood wide enough to accommodate power and or canister filter equipment. If you want to PM me, I can give you the number of the guy at SC who can give you more details on dimensions so you can be sure if your existing or planned equipment will fit. smile.gif

Personally, I love acrylic tanks - but actually if you are going to move a lot, that is one reason I would consider glass... unless, maybe you keep the original package in which the tank is shipped to you - I have the boxes, fitted foam, and special plastic that comes over the acrylic flattened and stored under the bed for just such an occasion!

Finally, something good out of tax season! I can't wait for you to get your tank! laugh.gif
