What would be the best size to use as a hospital tank for an 11 inch comet? I know normally she would need at least 20 gallons, but would the same apply to a hospital tank? I am treating her for finrot and know it would be best to have a separate tank. I have an extra Penguin 330 I would use for filtration and a spare air pump and stone to use for aeration.

An 11 inch comet, huh? Thats a pretty big fish. biggrin.gif

Well, if your planning on cycling the penguin 330 to keep the comets water free of ammonia/nitrItes, I would recommend that you keep it in a 20 gallon tank. For a comet that big, the current created from the filter wont be too much to handle. Just be sure to provide some silk plants or something to baffle the flow a bit to create a "sweet-spot" for resting in.

Yep, definitely at least a 20 gallon. Remember, it doesnt even need to be a real tank. Rubbermaid storage bins work great for temporary housing of fish.

Good luck! smile.gif

If I go with a rubbermaid, do I need to do anything specific to it before I put water and the fish in, beyond rinsing it? I was planning on using the cultured biowheels from my other 330 and keep a close eye on the water params in the old tank.

I have one about that size. Food does it to em lol

I use the ruber maid 18 gal set up for mine. I have two going when I have an ill fish. One is in use and the second one is ready to move my fish into if their water gets too messy or for each dose of meds. I keep switching them back and forth. I clean them out befor setting up for the next rotation by using aquarium salt and scrub it down. some use bleach but the salt seems to work fine.

I agree on the size completely. But if at all possible, find a container that holds something with an increment of 10 gallons in it. 20 gallons, 30 gallons are fine. 18 gallons or 16 gallons are far more difficult.

Nearly all medications, if and when you may need to treat - are sold in measurements of 10 gallons. Trying to split a capsule or a tablet is difficult!

I picked up my hospital tank today. It's a 20H gallon glass tank. I will be running a penguin 330 with biomedia from my old tank plus an airpump rated at up to 30 gallons. After I treat Ariel for her finrot, I plan on using it to house my 2 orandas, Sade and Fred Jr.
