I'm thinking of getting some Peppered corydoras this coming weekend to go with a betta I’m buying but i don't really know how to look after catfish. These will be my fist step into the world of bottom feeders so any advice will be greatly appreciated.
The main question I have are:

1:What can i feed them?
2: Can i salt a tank with cories in?
3: Will they get on with a betta?
4: Do they need to eat drift wood like plecos do?

Any other pointers that anyone can give me will be very appreciated!

Hi there

Corys dont eat driftwood or algae like plecs do and eat flaked food as it falls to the bottom, just remember that they also need bloodworm in the diet as well. No salt in the tank with corys either. bettas are fine with them also. Make sure the gravel is pea sized or even better still sand.
Hope that helps smile.gif

I agree with what Sandy said. I kept many cories for years and just loved them! I had mine in a fully planted tank and they enjoyed hiding in the plants and also the driftwood caves. If they have hiding places like that they will be more comfortable and will come out more often. Mine were out in the open most of the time.

The substrate is important like Sandy mentioned. I found that even fine gravel wore their little barbels down so I would recommend a nice coarse sand. I used building sand and then they could sift through it but it was coarse enough to not get stirred up or sucked into the filter or gravel vac.

Good luck! Cories are the best!

The tank that i'm setting up is this 5gal tank. i'm thinking of putting 2-3 cories in there plus the betta. there are a few plants and i'm going to find a cave ornament/plant pot this weekend so they will all have something to hide in.

The gravel is small and smooth so hopefully it's ok for the cories. I'd really love to have the cories but at the mo i'm starting to have second thoughts as I don't want them to be cramped or hurt by the fighter. I guess i'll see what other advice you guys give me and see how things go.

I think the corys would be cramped in the tank im afraid peanuts. You could try pygmy cory if you can get them

Thanks, sandy. I might just stick to the betta, I don't know if my LFS does Pygmy Cory. sad.gif
