I currently have 7 Goldfish in a 40 gallon tank with a Filter for an 80gallon tank on it. I was wondering if i could move my small Platies in the summer together with the goldfish. I have about 45 small Platies (About 2 months old by now) which will be arround 4 months old when i intend on moving them. If i slowly move them in (2 a day or so) will they go along with the Goldies? or could they start fighting with one another and having conflicts? thanks!

Hi & welcometo.jpg

How big are the goldies and what breed? Most likely they're gonna eat the platies.

Btw FYI, ur already almost twice overstocked with the goldie tank.

I know but thats specifically why i mentioned the fact that i have an 80 gallon filter. and i do water changes if i need to (i check the water parameters once a week or when i noticed i getting dirty.) And i have 1 red cap oranada, 2 black moores, 2 red ryukins and 2 calcios, all of which are about 2inches. so not all that big. and as well as ive said before i intend on adding the Platies in about 2months, they are already quite big so in 2 more months i suppose theyll be at least 1 inch in size. Tanks for the reply and hope this clarrifies a little more biggrin.gif

Still, sad to say, overstocked is overstocked...no matter how much filtration you've got. I would highly not recommend putting your platies in there unless you want them to be lunch for the goldies. That and platies are tropicals, they have very different needs from goldfish....temperature, and nutrition just to name a couple.

As nichjake said, ur still severely overstocked. The 80-gal filter, how many gallons per hour does it turn? Ur tank need a filter with 400 gph turnover rate.

I guess the tank is ok for a few months, but when ur goldies get big, then u gotta upgrade to a much bigger tank.

Then about the platies. When the goldfish gets big, then even 1 inch platies will be tasty snacks for them.

goldies will try to eat moving objects.

but i already hve a platy in there and its doing just fine, its a platy that came together with the Mother that gave birth to my 45 fry. so i dont think they would necesarilly want to eat the platies, maybe the water conditions could turninto a problem but not necesarily the goldies eating teh platies.

It is fine now when ur goldfish are still small, but when they grew to 7-8 inch then they'll most likely try & eat the platies. I've read some postings here where white cloud minnows got eaten by goldies.

And still about ur tank. As I said, it *might* be ok now to have all 7 goldies in the 40 gal (as long as u religiously change ur water) but as I said they're gonna grow big and the 40 gal will be very crowded soon & maintaining the water quality will be a pain in the buttocks.

Well it's up to you if u wanna put the platies in with the goldies or not. Once again, as people have said here, platies are not recommended to be put together with goldies as they're tropicals and have different living needs, and u might find one morning all your platies are gone and ur goldies' tummies slightly larger than last night rolleyes.gif

lol ok i understand. yeah i never thought it would be easy having that many fish in one tank expsecially since they are not 100% compatible, but at least ide like to give it a shot and if they happen to start fighting and dying at any point in time, then ill probably find a way to solve the problem then. thanks for all your help biggrin.gif
