The idea is that they will not be in there very long, but stores without a fast turnover rate will keep them there much longer until someone buys them. Most stores restock their fish once a week, so you can bet some of them are there at least a week. its sad, but that is how it is done almost anywhere. LOL if I ran a pet store I think Id save my milk jugs and put them in there when they arrived! Its better than little cups but hardly looks professional. Oh well.

yah, at my work, we sell them in the little cups, but they sell REALLY quickly..we got this new stock in, and there were at least 50 bettas (we keep their cups nice n' clean and full) anyways, we got alot of them in, and then about two days later, there were only four left...so we take pretty good care of them (for a place that keeps em in tiny cups) but it is sad still...
