blink.gif Frumps left me another egg clutch.. its huge this time and isnt completely dried out, do they dry on the outside or are they always nice and squishy? they are squishy on the inside, where it was still attached (i took them off and put them in a little damp tub) so if they are fetilised would the ones still wet hatch?
maybe Bean's a boy.. unsure.gif

biggrin.gif The clutch kind of dries on the outside after so many hours.Keeping it in a moist container though & in a warm place will definately show results of babies if Bean infact is a boy. laugh.gif Good luck! biggrin.gif

yay laugh.gif its in a little plastic food tub with a little moat (sp) running round the edge, on top of a heated tank under a towel.. should be fine smile.gif

I'm confused, I've got no idea whether these eggs are fertile, there are no black dots or anything in them that i can see, but they have been getting darker in the last couple of days, like in photos i've seen.. but what are they supposed to smell like blink.gif mine smell like rotten eggs.. thats not good right?
froggydella
LOL-Sorry I had to laugh about the rotten egg smell your talking about Lucy!

I am not sure myself what the are suppose to smell like, If anything really.

But....How Exciting huh! smilie_staub.gif How long have you had them in the tub? I sure wish mine would make some babies, I think it would be so cool to watch. exactly.gif

When my apple snails Gary and Blue laid eggs and I decided to hatch them I floated the clutch on a piece of styrofoam in a little clear deli container with the lid on, holes poked for ventilation. I misted the clutch daily and kept them where they were under a heat lamp for my frogs, that way the heat would condense in the container. It will darken and all of a sudden you will see the little babies everywhere, like grains of sand. I don't remember a smell tho... blink.gif I took them out with a turkey baster when they hatched out and put them into a nursery tank. I fed them really finely crushed algae pellets and goldfish crumbles. I order snail biscuits to feed my adults. I have a tankful! When it warms up a little more if anyone is interested in some jade imperfects I will send some your way, just pay shipping! I got overrun fast by my babies. They grow quickly and before you know it you have 50-200 snails you need to find homes for! krazy.gif But they are sweet! heartpump.gif

Yea the smell is wierd.. lol maybe they've died.. its quite a dead smell blink.gif
I cant actually remember how long they've been there, probably the day before this thread started *checks date* ok so about 20th feb.. no idea what date is today..
Lady_D
If there is a fowl smell, it is safe to assume that they are not going to hatch. Maybe it was unfertilized? Better luck next time!

Snails and snail eggs smell absolutely terrible when they die so I'm thinking they are dead. Sorry.
x-Lucy-Fish-x
sad.gif ok.. at least i dont have to deal with tons of babies. should i chuck em out then, maybe squish them first just in case?
froggydella
Aw Bummer Lucy! I was hoping you'd have some snaily babies soon. Maybe next time. sad.gif

I think it's safe to assume that they are dead-You could probably dispose of them now if ya want too.

Sorry Hun. 00001649.gif

PS Lucy-Today is March 2nd laugh.gif

y'know.. i forgot about them so didnt throw them out.. and they dont smell anymore, just a bit, but i think thats just the manky smell of the tub they are in, and most of them are getting a lot darker.. i think im gunna leave them in the tub for a couple of weeks just to make sure.. ? i might aswel..

blink.gif As long as you don't see any black kind of mold or fuzz growing on them,I'd leave them for a bit more. The eggs growing darker does seem to be a sign of how they normally do proceed to hatch so I wouldn't jump the gun yet. With the gazillion snails that I've hatched,I don't even recall the smell that they had. blink.gif laugh.gif
x-Lucy-Fish-x
ignore.gif ok never mind.. i squished them, they were definatly dead, there was nothing but slime in the eggs, and that was a pong il never forget rofl3.gif

EeeWww! Yeah, I know that smell TOO well! Sorry to hear that they didn't hatch. Better luck to you next time! Is this the one of the first few clutches she has given you? When they are young their first few aren't usually fertile. Some of the clutches are actually quite messy, not the usual well shaped clutch you want. This might be a dumb question, but Frumps is with a male snail, right? I don't know anything about this tank... biggrin.gif
x-Lucy-Fish-x
I'n not really sure, so not a stupid question, but i dont think she is with a male, lol but i hear they can store sperm for a while so i dont just chuck the eggs.. its the second clutch, and yea they are pretty messy eggs all different sizes etc. smile.gif
Lady_D
From the information that I gather Frumps is still a very young snail. Since her clutches are still messy I doubt that she has been mated with, meaning her clutches are infertile. A female will lay eggs if they are fertilized or not if they are in a good enviroment. Obviously, since she is giving you clutches, she is very happy with her home. Good job! biggrin.gif Once the clutches are a more regular shape then the possibilites that they are fertile (assuming you have a male in the tank biggrin.gif) are higher. Do you know what a nominal clutch shape looks like?
x-Lucy-Fish-x
i think so.. like a blob.. but a shape like.. erm.. i'll look it up! biggrin.gif

I got her about october time last year so she is still young, how long do they live?
Lady_D
[COLOR=purple]Lifespan depends on several factors. One is water temp. Snails in warmer water will grow faster and have an increased metabolism, but also won't live as long. I would say about 2 years on average, depends on the age she was when you got her.
