I went to a great lfs today and they had ramshorn egg clutches. So now I have about 45 ramshorn eggs. I'm obviously planning on hatching them, my only question is how in heck do you raise snail babies? Do I need to do anything special or will they be fine if I just put them in the tank? I've got an empty two gallon tank and two set up, cycled tanks; a 29 and a 10. The 29 has goldies and brigs so I don't think it would be wise to put them in there. The 10 gal has just got a betta.

right now I've got the eggs in a cool whip tub until I know where to put them. I also noticed that three baby malaysian trumpets were clinging to the clutch so I've got some of those now biggrin.gif

If they are the Ramshorns that I'm thinking they are, then you won't need to do anything special except keep them by theirselves ,until they get bigger, because some Snails will not only eat the clutches of eggs, they'll also go for the baby snails themselves, so keep an eye on those MT's,and make sure that they are not dining. blink.gif Those snails (along with Mts) seem like the fastest Breeder's. yikes.gif laugh.gif

I know. I didn't realize until after I bought the clutch that rams are asexual ohmy.gif . Ah well, I've got plenty of goldies and brigs that would be happy to eat any extra eggs. Oh, one more question, does anyone know how long they take to hatch? They were just laid yesterday so I'm just wondering how much longer it should be until I can expect some babies. biggrin.gif

blink.gif I don't really know for sure. One day there's nothing, and the next-we know it all. All I know is that there's nothing, and then all of a sudden theres a ton of baby snails covering the glass, krazy.gif

My ramshorns laid eggs on the 4th of this month, I can see the babies and they ate all of their egg but they are still in the blob itself. With in the week they should all be out and roaming about. The temp of the tank is around 74, so depending on what the temp of your tank is you still have a while to go.

Oh yeah and I have Marisa ramshorns so hopefully thats what you have and not those little pest red ramshorns. Heres some info on marisa ramshorn snails.

Hmm, so they're not asexual...GOOD! I don't where I read that...oh well, glad its not true. They're definatly marissas. The only snails in that tank were brigs, marissas and MTS. So I think its safe to say they're marissa eggs. In some of them I can see something developing in the egg. It very faint though. Right now I've got them in a net hanging in my betta tank. I think he's taken it upon himself to guard the eggs laugh.gif He always over by them and peering into the net to see whats in there laugh.gif

ooohh its so exciting. In about 90% of the eggs I can see the little snails developing. Most of them aren't any larger than the little ball in the tip of a ball point pen but its just so cool biggrin.gif . I can hardly wait until they hatch. banana.gif

www.applesnail.net is a really good website for info on snails, and the message board are wonderful! I learned a lot there when I got my applesnails and hatched out their eggs.

yeah, I'm a memeber over there to. I just joined last week when one of my apple snails layed a clutch. Now I've got haustrum eggs and ramshorn eggs. laugh.gif

I have been a member there for a long time too, but I regret to say I am not as active as I should be. I have not been on in a few months...

smile.gif One thing I'd like to add about Marissa's and their babies,is that they have HUGE appetite's and will eat almost anything including live plants, and other snail clutches & live babies. yikes.gif
I have a huge Rubbermaid tub that houses Cana's,Brig's,Spixi's,and Marissa's.
I was always adding babies from other tanks because there was alot of room & also want to mention that because this tub's water is so good, that alot of eggs have been laid by all the different snails.By chance,I noticed that all the babies were disappearing-all newborns/all bigger babies, etc.and found out on Applesnail why---The Marissa's!! ignore.gif Anyway, that's one way to keep your population in check. blink.gif
