My little sister's class had two commons that died today. They were in a 1gal tank with a UGF. Terrible but they were in a pickle jar before before I told Olivia to use that tank.

She has asked if she could take one of my Bettas (Marina) for her class. She is going to ask her teachers if she can bring one in, but only she would be allowed to take care of it (she's been following me like a lost puppy when I'm cleaning the tanks and whatnot.) I would type up a care sheet for it and ONLY she would be allowed to do anything regarding the care.

Would this be a good idea of not? Any opinions or alternatives?

I don't know about that, they had goldfish in a jar. Maybe try it for 2 weeks and check out the fish yourself, pop in without telling them and see how the tank is. If it is good and your daughter has been taking care of it, then it should be fine. I would never be able to give up my betta, even for the short time left for school, with the possiblities of it not being cared for. But you know your daughter and the teacher and it is up to you. Good Luck.

Olivia is my little sister.

I can't pop in because they get out of school at 2:45 p.m. and I don't get out until 3:15 p.m. So that's out of the question. She has after school homework club. Maybe when I go by her school on my way home I can swing by (on the days that she stays after) and check up on it/her. Her teacher is the kinda person that thinks goldfish are "just fish" but says that she loves animals. A little hypocrite if you ask me. That was beside the point.

She would do good with a fish. She can't have one at home because her last Betta (he's mine now) was neglected. I'd let them have him, but he's getting old and needs more specific care now.

I'm open or more suggetions!

Its just me but I couldn't trust any of my fish with anyone else but myself. In a classroom of sixth graders, there will always be those stupid trouble makers, and even if you teach your sister she could mess up or get lazy on care. Even in highschool I know people are always messing with my mice during different hours. It scares me when the lid isn't all the way locked the next day how I left it.

I think your betta is better off with you smile.gif

They have Neon Tetras in a pickle jar. Her teacher is so dumb. Olivia tries to educate her about it, but she says that she's dumb and doesn't know what she's talking about.

Her teacher says she's dumb? ohmy.gif

With a teacher like that I'd say no way. Your sister might very well go in with the best intentions but teachers can be very meddlesome and if she keeps an type of fish in a jar I wouldn't trust her anywhere near your betta. Just my two cents
Fish_Fanatic
i agree...i wouldnt let a teacher who keeps fish in a jar go anywhere near my own betta!!! i think its best to NOT let the class have a fish, ask to take the tetras of their hands (if u have room for them). maybe u could write the teacher a letter with large amounts of information and many references for proper fish care etc. dry.gif
Anic
I don't want to sound pessimistic, but I know her teacher wouldn't read it or take it seriously. I think if I asked to take the Tetras ( I do have room for them) she would say that I was being rude.

She isn't even her real teacher. Her real teacher broke her hip the beginning of the year when she got bucked off of a horse.
Anic
Actually, I'll try to get some info from here. I'll reference it, of course.

One day when teacher is not in the room, take the jar with the fish in it and RUN then you have some newfish.gif that would be happy. rofl3.gif That might smarten up the teacher from getting any other fish in classroom.

Good post! Heh...I've done the same, and for most similar cases I think its the right thing to do, considering morals. I actually wrote an essay about that; stealing a fish out of a neglectful enviroment for its health. To the average person, stealing is stealing, no matter how its being treated, especially from children. My arguement was that morals were relative, and that it was in the best interest of the fish to LIVE while the kid was sad for a while until they got a new toy.

Anyways.....stealing is stealing, but I still think its the right thing to do in some cases. Just don't get caught! wink.gif

She said one of them died yesterday. She's going to ask the teacher if I can have the one left. I'm doing a go0gle search on the tetra care. I doubt the teacher will budge any.

Hi thhis is Anics' lil'sis. I have a sub and a girl in my class named Jerrica brought in some comon gold fish (2) to be exact. when shee first brought them in everybody feed them constantly she said she dind't know about it but I just couldn't belive her. Well when she and some other girls whent to change the water they didn't bother to see if the temp was right.so this whent on until the last time in forever to change the water they filled up a large coffe cup they put frezzing water in it and they shoked them they started to laugh about it.Even Jerrica started to laugh about it. So what they did was they whent downstairs to the girls restroom and flushed 'em. then Our sub got neon tetras.i complaind to her about them taking care of them last time she said they would be just fine. i told her the number of groups they live ect. I asked her to let me take care of them thhis time or someone more responsable than them but she calls them responseable but they killed goldfish you have to try to do that. today one of the neons died okay his name is funny [COLOR=blue]Shizzle Dizzle Gizzem Gaurdand guess what only my freinds and I cared. Okay sorry for getting off course but I needed to shake the anger off of me. So please send a reply of your opinion. This Anics lil'sis

ohmy.gif Oh that's terrible! Good for you for caring for them (Olivia, right?). A lot of people are terrible to animals, especially fish. Its just as common in high school as in elementary and that's just sad that people don't learn. Honestly, I don't think any fish or pet is safe in your class with your sub and some of your classmates. Sneak home the neon tetra!!!!

Here's some info:

Neon tetras are some of the most sensitive type of tetra fish so they need to be very well taken care of. They do best in groups of at least five or six and shouldn't be kept with large or aggressive fish. They should be introduced into a mature cycled tank with lots hiding places, a filter, and a heater. Neons like soft acidic water (low pH) but as long as the water conditions are stable they should be fine. If you bring home the fish, make sure you slowly add a tiny bit of water at a time to the fish's container so it can get used to new pH's, temperatures, and properties of the new water. To properly stock a tank with neon tetras, there should be at least 1 gallon per neon, but you should have at least a 7ish gallon tank so he can have buddies and room to swim. With this type of set up with a filter, you can change some of the water once every two weeks or so. However, if you can not bring them home and they have to stay in a jar at school (nooo sneak them home!!) do small water changes every other day. I hope all goes well!
Anic
Thank you very much I will print the page out and tell my sub to read the last to but she most likely wouldn't care. How do you know all of this do you have neons? Or do you just learn from the web. :D :thanks :iwill again
Anic
OH and if the last one dies do you think they should get another? I would say no if i was the sub. I feel terrible for 2 goldies and 1 neon lets not make 4 or more don't you think.
Anic
Sorry guys. I didn't know she was writing all that crap. I'll try to get a mod to delete it.
Ponderosa Power
Lol tongue.gif I have to admit though, the W-mart part made me laugh.

Tell your sister she's welcome and that I don't have neons but I have similar fish and just know about neons. Tell her that getting another class pet fish isn't a good idea, and that a ten gallon tank is always better than something smaller if there is no filter in the old tank. She can get just the glass tank for $10 at W-mart too. She can try a snail in the tank or some cories if she likes, but make she sure knows it may not work out. Your sister's cute Anic.
Anic
does anyone think that he would be just fine in a 1 gallon (Betta)

I can't believe a teacher would treat fish so cruelly, are they not there to teach kids how to be responsible and independent. She is showing the kids to buy fish, keep them in the smallest container they have and ignore water changes and keeping care of the fish properly. Maybe someone should go talk to the priciple and bring up these points and maybe he will go talk to her. Print out information about care of fish that the principle and teacher can read. Hope things change.
Anic
I've typed up a care sheet about Neon Tetras and a letter to the teacher. I'm sending it with Olivia Monday.
