~ hey ~ If you remember i told you that i found a femlae guppy when i did a gravel vac and she is now pregnant and i have a one gallon hexagon and i was wondering how soon should i put her in there becuase she has the dark black spot, and the tank has an airstone going and no gravel or plants!
There is no heater as i am letting it set for a few days and letting it get room temperature!
I was wondering how soon should i put her in there or should i put her in the biggest fish net they make, which i have and lay it across the top of the tank and let her give birth in there and then let the fry go in the 1 galon?
Thanks! need advice asap!

When you say net, do you mean a breeder net, or the kind you catch fish with? If it's a breeder net, you don't want to put the female in early and you don't want to keep her in for very long or she will get stressed out. If it's a regular fish net, don't keep her in that

It's not easy, but if the female gives birth in the main tank and you are there to see (or some manage to hide before they are eaten or pulled into the filter intake), you can use a small container to catch them. I use a dixi cup to catch the fry

Reguarding the 1 gallon tank.... If the female is very close to giving birth and you have a small filter in there, you could probably keep her there for a couple days but because it's such a small tank you don't want to keep her there for very long. Also, you said there's no gravel or plants? You should toss some fake plants in or something, even if it's just to let them float around. If there's no cover, the female will likely eat them as she's giving birth. The fry like to go hide if they feel nervous or afraid too.
Somebody else may add something further or suggest other info/ideas to you, but I thought I'd toss that in really fast! Good luck with the fish!

i should think the 1gal would be ok for her for a few days.. just keep an eye on your params... do youp have the testing kits yet?

as for the fry.. i spose you might be able to keep them in the 1 gal when they are very young, depending on what size they are.. i would suggest you would have to do VERY regular water changes on them though.. are your parents still rationing the amount of waater you can use??
when you say you 'found' a female guppy, do you mean you found a fry? (i missed that thread) if it was not very long ago, then i highly doubt she will be pregnant.. what made you think she is? and how far gone do you think she is?

yes my parents are still complaining about the amount of water that i use and no i do not have the test kit yet becuase i do not have the money becuase of us just buying a house and i have tio buy the desk remember?
Yes i did find a fry of a guppy that died! But when i found her she alredy had color and was like half the size of the adult! I think this becuase she has the dark spot where it should be and she is increasing in belly size!
Thanks!
I added some fake plants to the one gallon!

The gravid spot starts showing up early... I noticed the spot on my last batch near 2 1/2 - 3 weeks of age. (heh, there were 2 with gravid spots, but later on the 2nd lost the "gravid spot" and ended up being a male LoL!).
If that was fry from the one guppy, she may not be pregnant yet and just starting to grow into her shape, but then again, depending on her age, she could be pregnant. A picture may help, like Tink said, or you can wait and keep a close eye out. Good luck!

rubbing up against rocks is a sign of bad water or parasites..

if youre going to post a question, then you should expect people to answer it as best they can Dean, if you think you know the answer, then why post the question??

She looks pregnant to me guys. The scratching though isnt normal and with her being so small she might not get through the birthing process.

do you think? it might just be me, but she looks very very small... i have females that have that spot, but are definately not preggers..

It is hard to tell but they can breed at a young age no matter what size she is as she could be stunted. Tough call, just have to wait and see.

Dean, im getting so confused. what happened to the money you got for your birthday?? you said you didnt have to spend that on the chair & desk in the end, so where did it go?
ok so youve got 12 fish in to 10g right? im sorry you seem to be getting annoyed with us, but we are only tying to help Dean.
but the rubbing really isnt a good sign. i dont know how much test kits cost over the pond, but they are only about £6 here, thats a small price to pay for the health & well-being of your fish.

Tink's right Dean. I was also wondering about your birthday money. The thing about fish,if you expect them to flourish, you have to do it right.I know that you really like your fish, but they might be something that you should think about at a later time, when it is all more affordable for you.Unfortunately, when starting out,it does take money to set you up.Once you get the main materials that you need, you can sit back and start to enjoy. It is very difficult to keep a tank in pristene conditions without a test kit. When I first started,I didn't have one either,(it was years ago)

,but I knew enough to know that weekly water changing was a must to at least keep it near good. You are having problems even with that right now.Your mother gives you a hard time,I know...You can not keep live bearing fish on this type of set-up.You are asking for trouble. So far, you've been lucky and not had many babies, for if you would have-your tank would be really screwed up. We talked about how much you care for your fish, and how you worry that you're not doing the right thing,so I understand what you feel like, and I know you must get frustrated. I seriously would think about seeing if the fish shop could take your fish back for now.If you really want to keep something, I would advise a Betta. Don't get me wrong, they require pristene water and have needs too,but if you kept a Betta alone in a 10 gal. tank, you could go for longer periods of time between water changes as long as you didn't overfeed, and maybe tried to do a gravel vac for any excess food. Maybe this is a happy medium for now????

Well i have tried to get the fish stores to take my fish and they will not becuase they come off of someone elses hands and care so if they are sick they dont want their fish getting sick so they will not, should i try selling them here on kokos?
THanks!

You can try on here, if theres someone who lives near you and can pick them up etc. coz we already figured its not worth the cost to ship these fish.. maybe do a search for some more fish forums, almost every one has a buy and sell section, post on each one and im sure you will find a home for them.

i thought your lfs said they will take the babies?? if they said that, why cant they take the adults?
020292
Feb 11 2006, 07:56 PM
they will not take the babies becuase there are too much other expenses and they said they would take like 2 or 3 of them and not give me any money for them!
I want money for them!

Dean it would be best to give the babies to them, money or no money, for the sake of your own fish. They are offering a favor. People don't pay you to do you a favor.

Mailing fish is something that I am not looking forward to doing Dean. There is a process to follow. You may want to see what materials you'll need, and study up on it. You can check this site out.If you go0gle,you'll find more.
