When u mean all the way to the top, does the water surface touch the hood?

That's ok then, as long as the surface of the water doesn't touch the hood

Hi Ricky, I think what you are saying applies more to people who have goldfish bowls (if anyone still does that is) and/or tanks/containers which get narrow towards the top, in those cases a lack of surface area can affect the amount of oxygen exchage available for the fish.
I'm guessing you have regular shape tanks so I would'nt worry as long as your not overstocked or your water level is not right up at the very top of the tank rim - best to leave space for water current to move about without spilling over your tank edges etc.

oh..opps...yeah..my water is almost up to the top of the rim of the tank..3 more inches then it up there..so..should i lower the water it down like in the middle of the tank level then??

3 inches from the top is enough space for water movement & ripples

ur ok there. u can even go higher and fill it up again a bit if u want

I keep the water in all my tanks right at the black rim on the top since I dont like to see the water line

I take mine right to the overflow of the filter - plenty of surface agitation, but no waterfall noise!

I actually go about 1/4 inch above the lip of the overflow.

I am another one that doesn't like to see the water line, so fill it to the black rim of tank.
I also have this problem, a couple of my HOB filters have an overflow that is lower than the water line. Is it ok to fill water over the overflow or does that cause less oxygen?
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I'm still in the learning phase here.
